Looked over my last journal almost 2 years ago and one prior to that on my dead account, some 6 years ago and things have changed with my werewolves. I tweaked some designs, made things more linear and as such, decided it was time to update this journal.
Please note that these are MY werewolves and they won't be the same as someone else's/Hollywood werewolves so if something displeases you, you're more than welcome to go about your day.
THE UNIVERSE AS A WHOLE:
Each werewolf has different lifestyles and as such, I cannot pinpoint exactly which lifestyle is THE lifestyle. My universe takes place in the far future where things are modernized but also very foreign. Rather than like...10 billion humans, there's roughly 2 billion, with a bit more land than the normal Earth.
However, countries still have their respective names and as such, werewolves are named accordingly. Hence why Darm is half-Brazilian, the Oyabasu are japanese/Japanese-American, Paradox is mostly French and Jamalai is African-American.
Because I, myself, am American and only know of American traditions, culture, standards, laws, etc. I based my characters off of that aspect. However, I also do research on other cultures so I don't make an ignorant mistake. Please note though, that my characters are Half-American because it's the only location I KNOW.
As mentioned before, the world as a whole is diverse and while it's still majority of water, there's more land in several areas. America, Canada, Mexico, and South America are larger, as well as Australia. Antarctica is somewhat smaller, seemingly given some of its size to Canada. Despite this, not much has changed. The world still acts the same but again, it's both modernized and not. Some places still act 'modern' like New York where others, like Africa are mostly old tribes and shamans. Things like wifi, cell phones, airplanes, Tvs all exist but things like massive toxic waste resevoirs and the like do not. Humans are still destroying the world in my universe but MUCH slower.
DIETS:
All werewolves are strictly carnivorous in their wolf forms, save for the exceptional grass and moss to soothe stomachs. However, in human form, all diets are acceptable. Vegetarianism and veganism is very rare but doable until the full moon where the wolf NEEDS meat. because wolves take a lot of energy shifting, vegetarian and vegan diets are hard to maintain as vegetation doesn't give them the necessary calories. Most sick wolves will generally go vegetarian to recover and then hound down meat as an added boost of power.
Iron, protein, potassium, sodium, and B12 are all necessary for werewolves to survive so when the full moon comes, they all partake in raw meats, hunting as a pack. In human form, wolves are also able to eat raw meat like turkey, hamburger, pork, and the like without getting sick as their bodies are biologically evolved to digest it. Likewise, the human half is engineered to digest cooked meat so neither form grows ill. HOWEVER, wolf form NEEDS raw meat and cannot eat cooked.
Fruits are something the human needs, same as grains and dairy. Wolves do not need these things but it's not uncommon for a travelling wolf to eat some berries or milk (if they can find milk, however). Wolves keep these things very rare as it can make them sick if not in moderation. Things like honey, insects, and roots/bark can also be eaten with little to not side effects though these are generally last resort meals.
BREEDING/RELATIONSHIPS:
Wolves can be pregnant with as many as six pups at one time; however, survival chance for even one pup is around 1-5% due to the complex DNA of wolves and humans. They are not compatible despite a female being able to be fertilized and often times, pups will not survive. Females and males generally do not grieve if they lose pups as it's almost as common as needing water to survive. Pups CAN survive for around one month, but once the full moon occurs and they try to shift forms, often times the strain is too much and they pass. To alleviate this, females will often stay in wolf form once they are impregnated to make sure the pup will not shift, giving it an extra chance. While werewolves are not affected by the full moon (excluding berserkers of course), it's practically instinctual for pups to shift on full moons.
Mates mate for a lifetime which is a LONG time considering they're Immortal. Generally, a relationship sparks with interests and compatibility, excluding superficial things like sexual attraction, appearances, and the like. Often times, wolves will relate over a hobby or career and go from there. Wolves can mate in either form and reproduce in either form. Babies will ALWAYS develop as pups, even if the mom is/was in human form.
Should a mate die, an alpha is able to step in and alleviate sexual urges such as a female/male in heat. HOWEVER; under no other circumstances is sleeping around acceptable. Cheating on your mate is, in many circumstances, punishable by death or sterilization. "But what about religions where multiple partners is ok!" This doesn't apply to wolves; one partner, no ands, ifs, or buts.
Should a werewolf fall in love with a human, they are able to sleep with them until the human is turned; if the bite doesn't take, only then are they allowed--under the Council's ruling--to seek a new partner. The Council must ALWAYS be notified of a human attraction in case something goes wrong (IE tipped off by a hunter, a werewolf working as a prostitute, etc).
Not all werewolves seek a mate once theirs dies. because they spent centuries with their mate, it can take centuries to heal, similar to humans. The longer the love life, the harder it heals up. People like Kiba, despite being an alpha, will not mate with another as they consider it going against their lover (though Ayame would want him to move on). Other alphas, like Koto, sleep around but only with females/males in heat and unmated. Normally, this only goes for widowed mates, but sometimes there isn't enough mates to go around. In situations like these, the Council prefers wolves to be promiscuous rather than the heated wolf go off and get in trouble with a human.
Werewolves CAN mate with other species but very rarely. Children generally do not come from pairings. This is excluded from Talon and Lily who had a child because of all the stuff that happened to Talon at the lab, altering his genetic makeup. However, this requires a special permit given by the Council. Humanoid species must mate with humanoid species ONLY. So werewolves can only mate with something that can become human and beast, like gargoyles, kitsune, angels, demons, and the like. Should the paperwork be denied for any reason, they must part ways and relationships.
TRANSFORMATION:
Werewolves are not affected by the full moon but transform once a month on this night as a sort of tradition. Excluding Berserkers who MUST change, wolves have full control this night and will hunt, mingle, 'sing', and just hang out with friends and packs. Every state has 1-3 'campgrounds' of empty land and trees dedicated to werewolves.
Transformation can be slow or fast, depending on certain things: health, emotions, energy, hunger, thirst, and environment. If a wolf is hungry or dehydrated, transformation will be slow or stop completely. A desert wolf will transform slower than an arctic wolf for example. Being cold is dangerous so the body responds quicker. An angry wolf will transform quicker than a content wolf due to adrenaline rushes, and a depressed wolf might not transform at all due to irritated brainwaves.
Wolves can also transform parts of their body at a time. These need total control to master. Often times, an angry wolf will change impulsively without really realizing, while a happy, excited wolf can sometimes spark a change. Outside of this, wolves blend in to society completely naturally. Some wolves who can't control themselves well will often hide shifting parts. A wolf whose eyes always glow without them knowing will wear sunglasses, for example, or a wolf whose ears keep changing will wear tight hats and beanies. Other times, wolves will wear larger shoes or looser pants in case of fur or skeletal changes.
There's also an intense combat called 'Transition' where two wolves will spar for alpha position or to reclaim their dropped title/larger disputes. To do this, each wolf will transform their bottom halves ONLY to wolf form, usually no higher than the genitals. The wolves are allowed to have fangs and claws, however. Once the fight begins, the winner is either the last one standing or the person who didn't shift into a full wolf. This is easier said than done as once a fight begins, the wolf will try and surge through, protecting the human by fully appearing. Often times in situations like these or if the fight is long, the rules will state the last one standing wins. These rules change accordingly and depending on several factors. Wolves who are evenly matched, blood relatives, or juveniles generally go for the 'last man' rule.
DEATH:
Despite being called Immortals, werewolves CAN die, through usage of strong magics. decapitation, disembowelment, even having the heart and brain destroyed elicits little to no harm to the wolf. Should any of this happen, the wolf will go into a death-like, comatose state and regenerate lost limbs, organs, and cells. This process can take from anywhere to a few minutes, to a few weeks, depending on severity. A lost leg will take a few days whereas a destroyed brain can take a few months. A papercut is nearly instant and a deep gash is a few minutes. Again, these are all things that change based on several factors, such as health, age, location, and mood. In a high-end society this process is quick, where a backend, poverty-stricken area might take longer.
When a werewolf dies, they do not revert to human form if they die as a wolf. Likewise, if they die as a human, they stay human. This makes it hard to identify a wolf who has lived or died as their DNA is different. Oddly enough, their corpses take a long time to 'dissolve'. A human decomposes in a few weeks, while wolves can take months. it's unclear why that is but it's just something wolves get used to.
Like humans, wolves have rituals when someone dies. The corpse is always buried in the loved one's favorite flowers or herbs and then laid on top of said flowers with their favorite blanket or coat. These are then placed in a large hole with room on each side for the wolf to escape through in case they aren't dead. Most of the time if a wolf is buried they are 100% dead but there's still precautions for the hopeful.
GIFTS AND TRAITS:
Each wolf has a gift or trait that is evident when they get older. There are some gifts that are evident at birth such as Seers, Auras, Chromithos, and other gifts such as rare 'birth gifts'. Kiba's emerald flame is rare in that he's the only one with green fire. Other flamecallers will generally have typical orange-yellow flames.
In Koto's case as a Seer, generally the eyes won't change until their 'blue' baby eyes disappear and change to their general colors. While being a Seer/Aura is a birth gift these gifts aren't evident until they age somewhat.
Other gifts are passed down through death or training. In Talon's case, his darkcalling was a birthgift but was only manifested when he was trained by Chitsume. On the same hand, Ayame could control and grow plants with her abilities but wasn't able to do it on her own until she was trained by the centaurs.
These gifts are unique and are not generally passed down through birth. Two watercallers can have an earthcaller child, a Seer or even a Chromithos. However, often times, there are certain DNA combos that WILL manifest in a gift or two. being a Chromithos is a family ability while being a Seer is random and rare. There were no Seers in the Oyabasu family until Koto, but in Paradox' family, there are handfuls of Chromithos for example.
It's rare for a wolf to NOT have a gift but not extremely rare. Raxx does not have a gift, for example. However, because he is lacking in an 'assistant' he is stronger physically.
EXTRA STUFF:
--Coats are ALWAYS natural colored. There can be bright oranges and blue-grays but they will never be full blue or red. The only time this doesn't hold true is if the wolf has dyed their human hair, which obviously doesn't change.
--There are gay and lesbian werewolves. Despite the 'no cheating' rule, Council members always make exceptions for sperm/female donors to hold a pup for the gay couple. Even if the egg or sperm is from someone else, the child is considered 100% the gay couple's child and 0% the donors. The donor will become the godmother/godfather though.
--Eye color varies in species but is totally random. Two yellow-eyed wolves can have a baby with green eyes, for example. Ranging from most common to rare: Yellow, blue, brown, white. Uncommon: Orange, pink, green, purple, hazel, hetero. rare: Red, black, silver, beige.
--Males can go into heat as well but once they become mated, both the male and female heat cycles will mingle, improving their chance of copulation. Females heat twice a year, males heat every 2-5 years, once a year.
--All wolves have their own strong, unique scent. To any passerby it smells like freshly applied cologne or perfume. They can change their smells at will, to something more alluring or something fainter.
--Scarring is rare but also common. If a wolf is weakened from a fight, scarring may occur as the wolf cannot heal at full energy. In Kina's case, he was anethesized by humans which threw his healing off whack. In Raxx's case, he was injured so much over such a small gap of time that his scabs would open and close constantly until he couldn't outheal the damage.
--Lost limbs can regenerate, lost organs and bones can too. However, lost eyes and ears are sometimes impossible to heal and grow from scratch. Lost eyes and ears are common as 'can't be fixed'. Majority of these wolves will cover their lost eye's socket or find a way to get skin grafted over it.
--Wolves CAN be allergic to themselves! It's a shitty situation but can be handled with treatments.
--Wolves can walk and run on two legs as easily as a human can. However due to their arching backs in wolf form, most prefer to remain on four legs.
--They speak telepathically in wolf form as they don't exactly have human lips. They can manage sounds verbally like growling, sighing, and laughing though it's garbled sounding. Some words that don't require much jaw or tongue movement are manageable verbally as well like 'yes' 'nah' 'mm' etc etc.
--There are several species of werewolves: forest, oceanic, arctic, desert, mountainous, and rainforest. Each wolves have their own unique structuring. Desert werewolves have longer ears and short fur while mountainous wolves have polydactyl paws and clumpy fur.
--Humans can be turned into werewolves, but much like with the infants, it's incredibly rare and in many cases results in death. High alphas and elders can administer the bite themselves, but other werewolves can only do it during sexual climax. Nobody is quite sure why. Towards the end of sex, a bitter, bile-like fluid fills the werewolf's mouth to the point it has to be swallowed down repeatedly or trickle out. Think of being starving and having a plate/bowl of your favorite food in front of you. The bile reaches its potency at the end, where the bite is administered.
--The heightened senses are always in effect even in human form. However, the werewolf can turn them down a notch. In addition, werewolves can control their body temperature, raising it a few degrees or dropping it. In a case like Talon, who has a thicker coat than even arctic wolves, this comes in handy. When werewolves travel to other countries for pack meetings, it is also something handy, such as a desert wolf going high-up north.
Please note that these are MY werewolves and they won't be the same as someone else's/Hollywood werewolves so if something displeases you, you're more than welcome to go about your day.
