Sounds like you had Ransomware on your PC. The encrypt your files and send they decyption code to someone who generally then asks you for money to get the key. Sadly getting more and more common these days because there is pretty much nothing you can do about it once it has happend :/

If you're running Windows, right click the FOLDER which contains the files and select Restore Previous Versions. Then select a date BEFORE the virus infected your system. You'll find all your files intact.

Not sure there is much to be done, it makes copy of the files and then deletes the original, so computer doesn't know it wasn't created by me

That doesn't matter. Previous versions restores files no matter whether they have been changed, renamed or deleted.

Annoyingly, it seems it has been turned off/never been on, on your system.

Control Panel > System > System Protection (On the left).
