Faith In Humanity RESTORED - Black Friday Edition
10 years ago
This is not furry related, but I think it is so important to share this.
So most people come away from Black Friday with horror stories. But not me, I have a beautiful story for all my LGBT+ and Ally friends today.
About an hour into my shift, roughly 6 am, a couple found their way into my line. They had a few toys in their basket as well a few toys in a big red bag. They asked me if
I was able to do exchanges since no one was at Guest Services. I told them it might take me a minute but I would be more than happy to help them (as it was 6 am and I had no line and nothing to do otherwise).
We start on the exchange and they lay out the toys that were in the bag which were Power Rangers, Jurassic Park, and Hot Wheels. They start talking amongst themselves as to whether they should really return this or that, but eventually they do return it all. I give them their amount back on a gift card (since this is the only way I know how to do a return) and we go to check out the new toys.
All of a sudden on the belt is a sea of pink, purple. My Little Pony and a brand new Barbie. The husband asks his wife, "Are you sure he wants all this?"
"It's on his list." She replies, he gives her a look. "It'll take some time but we'll get used to it. He's our grandson."
I, being nosy, ask, "Your grandson?"
"Last night at Thanksgiving, our youngest grandson told our family that he didn't feel like a normal boy. He wanted girl toys for Christmas this year and he wasn't sure yet, but he thinks he likes other boys."
I just looked at them, immediately realizing I had probably stumbled upon a sticky subject. Every part of me said to shut up, change the topic. But instead I said.
"I am so glad there are people like you two in the world."
The grandmother gave me a small smile and even the grandfather's lower lip flickered upward for just a moment. I swear to you, it took all I had not to cry at my register right then and there.
I made sure that I got them as many coupons as I could for the next time they came in, I loaded the new toys preciously into their cart, and as they left I bid them an amazing day.
My best story about Black Friday used to be about how popcorn popped in the back of a candle store will taste like candles. Now I have one that is even better.
