I feel really really lucky now to have gotten my hands on a Familiar Original then! It's kinda sucky that you won't continue to make custom plushies or fursuits (because I was hoping to commission you after Pedwar for my Maddie suit), but still, I can understand your decision.

I keep doing the math, and you would have to average 1-2 a month depending on what they sell for, but then taxes bend you over for about 50% of your profits. I think I'll just stick to premades at my own pace on the side for convention funds.

Honestly the whole taxes thing is probably my biggest hurdle. With a full time job I can treat this as a hobby and file taxes like it's a hobby..I really never ended up having to pay anything substantial. Builders who I have talked to that do live off fursuits primarily or do blanks and stuff have been doing this for over four years and I've REALLY only been doing this for less than two.

But yea, I didn't get a taste for it. Once I catch up on some bills and get a little cushion I would like to do faster turnover stuff in an etsy shop like hoodies and pillows and blankets and stuff like that, make some pre-made suits, hell, make myself a fursuit, I don't even have a fursuit.

"Technically" when you read into the tax regulations, anything over $400 profit for that entire year has to be filed as a small business (yeah, because you can live off of $400 a year). Hobbies have no exemption, but you can deduct the expenses of your hobbies (eg. You race cars, win $10k prize, spent $9,700 on your car getting there = no tax). Selling used goods is the same thing, any profit made over its original purchase is taxable. When you do the math, regular tax is 15-25% in the upper brackets, then you pay an additional 15-25% for your business, then state taxes, and finally every purchase you make has taxes. In the end, 50% of the money you make really isn't yours. Now in all reality, half the people you know would be audited due to that low $400 cap, they usually start from the top and work their way down.
Still pretty crazy when you think of it.

Good for you! It's a good thing to keep what you love to do lighthearted and fun. I am doing my first premade right now and I'm really loving it! Commissions are cool too, especially since you get to talk to someone who is also very excited about what you're making, but it isn't the same as doing exactly what you want, you know? I'm glad you know when to stop! I've seen a few people who don't and it's honestly kinda sad.
