Well, reseating everything and tidying up my cables fixed the previous issue and kept it fixed.

...I was right about the hard drive that's been used for ten years failing, though. It's not as bad as it could have been; I mostly used it to store big, easily-replaceable files (like video game installs). It had a few things I was transferring, but the original drive they came from is still working fine.
