YCHs can get ridiculous. I understand the idea but I'd much rather them be ideas for people who have trouble coming up with posing or concepts so its just as much bidding on an idea to be in. A lot of people believe in putting a bidding cap or auto buyout to keep them from alienating the less affluent of their customer base. Though obviously most artists are fine with letting people bid as much as they want to bid. Sometimes though, I feel like its sort punishing a fanbase for their brand loyalty by essentially pitting them against each other, creating artificial exclusivity, and preying on compulsive spending behavior like a casino with gambling -doing it for the 'rush' of winning plays a part in it.

Granted, this thing you linked is extremely out of the ordinary for a YCH. It's sort of a huge thing. Jesus it's up to 1,700 now.

I feel the same way. I don't like them at all for all of those reasons. The only ones that I think are fair are the ones at set prices or with auto buy features. This sort of thing shouldn't cost that much (the thing ryusho linked), and the artists don't care enough to cut it off. Basically they're just taking advantage of other people and their fanbase, which I'm not cool with.

That's the same price that someone could be buying a pretty decent partial fursuit, or a down payment on a car. Food for a couple months? Two months of rent?

It's not neccesarily about getting the art anymore but the trill of winning that bid it seems.

I find YCH weird anyway, I mean you would expect them to be cheaper but they are often more expensive and also combined with bidding U__U.

I have seen at least once, an artist who charged normally like, at most around 120$ for a piece of art when they did commissions, switch to doing basically 'only' YCH images it seems when I last checked, and they consistently seem to sell for 400$ or more. That bothers me heavily because I feel they are just trying to exploit people for money when they do that kind of thing, rather then letting people be able t commission them within their budget range, so they rarely seemed to take -normal- commissions anymore.

I have to agree, it also gives off the suspicion it's not so much about fun but about easy monney. Now I really aprieciate good art, and it takes skill, but compare this to other jobs, and it's not really called tiering to either brain, body, or both. So getting this much for something that: yes does take time and efford, but in my opinion not worth those rediculous prices is sad.

Problem is it also feeds the ego of the artist to an unhealthy extent. You have these freelance "furry" artists that believe they are vastly under appreciated and undervalued when in fact they compare themselves to artists who are typically in unions on commercial projects.

But yeah sadly the market dictates what something is worth and we have some pretty stupid people that pay $1800+ on crap. For even under $500 I could hire a top tier artist who would do the artwork. That game in particular has a free template provided so you can already include your character. But yeah those that go with YCH and Patreon exclusive crap seem to be more about the money than the actual craft. Then again those sort also bitch and moan about taking commissions in the first place and trashtalk their target audience in the process... yet people still hand over these egotistical artists wads of cash.

Yeah, I mean, I know an artist, who does commisions, and you can get a high quality, detailed, 3d model, with ownership so you can rig it up for use in your own projects, as well as an image to show it off as well for 100$, for 18k, you could get 18 of these darn models @_@

Yup. Commissions tend to be what makes an artist after profit successful in this fandom. When you get them intentionally making commission slots a rarity and going pretty much exclusive for YCH auctions because your popularity has grown enough to get obscene amounts of cash...at that point you're just being a greedy asshole. I mean while it is true people only pay up what they are willing to pay in such auctions the artist knows damn well what they're doing when they operate in that manner. On top of that these types can also publicly bash their fanbase and yet you will still get people stupid enough to throw obscene amounts of cash at them. And yet people wonder why we have this problem with egotistical popufurs. ;) Stupidity breeds stupidity.

Yep, though I will say that, Doing this often enough can cause enough "Really WTF" response if they do it too much, that it can drive future popularity away, and then can start causing problems even farther down the line as the word spreads, and their whales (free to pay/play term for -BAD- FTP games) start to drift off.

Exactly. It's ironic that he even made a journal about "entitlement" in auctions when he of all people displays that behavior quite regularly as of late. Despite the people that kiss the asses of popular folk that popularity does fade away in time. In my opinion it doesn't fade away fast enough though and that's my complaint on the issue.

Whether those like that believe or not they've caused some pretty serious damage to their reputations with such behavior but they are blind to this because they're drunk on their own "fame" and you have a minority ready and willing to throw piles of cash their way so they believe they do nothing wrong... at least until their style becomes played out and their egos give them this illusion they're burnt out. Some of them pack up shop and leave.

With respect, your mate is a bit wrong on that one. He is basically saying those that do not approve are entitled assholes per se. It's just so ironic that one of the most self-entitled artists on FA is pointing fingers at others and calling them entitled. lol I agree that people are free to spend their money how they choose but shitty business practices and people spending obscene amounts of money on what others may consider garbage or overkill does not exempt them from ridicule when all of this is done in the public eye. This is why people like that must resort to the fandom for an income because quite frankly..they can't hack it in the real business world. Too unprofessional, too high expectations and quite frankly this particular artist is a glorified low-rate tweener that cannot draw on his own. Even a tweener working professionally must know how to draw to even be considered for a job.
