Oh the Woes of Retail in the Snow
Currently living out one of those shitty predictable days in retail. The East Coast is about to get pounded with a snow storm. However, the snow doesn't start until later today. So, all of this morning we've been inundated with assholes who are off from work (because their businesses were wise enough to close ahead of time). Which would be fine if the rest of the day was unfolding like usual.
Most of the part time employees who are smarter/flakier than the rest of us have already called out and opted to stay home. Which leaves the store without a cashier for the entire day. And again, that'd be fine if it were snowing and the store was quiet. It isn't yet though and we've been busy enough that it's left everyone scrambling and trading off between covering the register and helping people on the floor.
And amidst all of this, my silent rage has been burning with every "Stay safe in the snow later!" and "Oh, I'm just poking around," I receive from customers today. Because the honest truth is that I've done my preparing and if it were left up to me [ie. if I didn't need this paycheck] I'd still be at home, curled up with a blanket and a coffee and drawing. But, instead, Im here so that other assholes who have the day off can "poke around" until the bad weather starts.
And when it does start, if a miracle happens and we actually close early, I'll then be struggling to make it home through however many inches of snow, hoping I don't get in a wreck with one of these idiots who just HAD to come out and shop. Or, you know, just hoping I don't get in a wreck...period.
My silver lining in all this? If I die in a fiery crash later...at least that lady got those plastic file boxes she wanted. She's going to do her taxes while she's snowed in. Isn't that sweet?

Her story wasn't solid then, just that she was an incredibly emo character (lol angst 16 year old self's stories and creations) but the artist really liked her and it still fits in with her character today; so I thought I'd crop it into an icon for a little bit cause nostalgia.
omg sorry about that ramble, i could talk about her forever hahaKnowing her story, I'd have to decorate her with those lovely crystal spikes. Such a cool concept!
Oh crap I need a spatula!
But it's ski and snowboard rentals.
So.
Snow makes it hell.
the other flip side... "oh he lives in [area blabla], and he showed up" well uh... he left before it was snowing don't give that excuse AND that person is manager (standing next to you because you're co-manager). don't be playing cards you don't have =/
"oh no, have to close early" don't guilt trip either because i know damn well none of your closers will show for next two days XD
Then again this is ND so it snows a lot and people do this a lot. Very annoying.
I just wanted my giant pot of homemade chicken noodle soup, dammit!
I'm sure the employees both at Wal-Mart and Publix were glad that I at least knew what I needed, grabbed it and got the fuck out quickly and without fuss.
Always baffles me too how easily frightened people are, oh no! snow. Time to stock up literally hours before hand. ALSO BUY COMPLETELY UNRELATED THINGS!! Nows a great time to think about my taxes haha. Which, I guess it could be but why think about file boxes now?
Ehh I really do feel for you though :c Stores open before a blizzard so that people can wander around aimlessly with their heads cut off.
