Suicide: The Taboo Subject
No I'm NOT committing suicide, NOR even planning to take steps to do so. But its a subject that makes me think. Mainly because I want to better myself, and help others to understand why people do it, and if there is a way, to intervene or help.
Now Prepear for a TL:DR article -
Finland, has one of the top highest suicide rates in the world, next to Japan, Russia and Korea. At the start of this year, the Fin-furs lost 2 to suicide, and this made me ponder.
What drives one to take away their own life. Sure, In my opinion it's everyone right to do so, and times are rough right now; so I can limitedly understand suicide, in terms of saving the life or quality of life of others (for example, in a poor family, someone decides to take their own life so that there is more food for the rest) or when you get hit with a terminal illness, and do not want for the cost of keeping you alive to go on for too long for your family and friends.
In some cultures, However Ending ones own life is a mortal sin (and condemned in 'afterlife' if there is one), While in others, its an honorable death, if done in the proper circumstances (for example, after losing and surviving a battle, one may retrain their honor by Seppuku in Feudal Japan).
Overall, Suicide has been, still, and will be a method of ultimate escape in our world.
But we live in a modern society, with our modern technologies and escapes. Especially, I find it surprising to have a really high rate of suicides in Finland, where the government practically gives social security payments or jobs to everyone that has a low income. Of course there are its own problems within the system, but overall, those with no assets or money get support from the government, * suicide * should not be an issue in this country. It might be that that these individuals are not, indeed seeking out help, or getting it but waiting for the help to come to them. I did get why people did it in the past, but in a modern society such as this, if you get bottom low you can always come back up.
While living in the Philippines, I walked through/near its countless of slums: Many individuals, living off less than a dollar a day, lived in large clusters of metal shanties that did not, usually withstand the typhoons that occur there. Yet, the rate is 2.1 suicides PER 100 000 individuals per year, which is very light, compared to the 31 suicides per 100 000 individuals in Finland.
Of course, I'm leaving out some of the factors effecting the suicide rate in the Philippines that the country it self is predominantly Catholic (with the southern part being Muslim), and some other factors such as natural disasters. But regardless, these people withstand, much, more pain, work, and trouble to live out their lives.
Is it the quality of life, when suddenly taken away thats create our desperate need to think of an escape? I think this is the most likely reasoning behind suicides. According to some minor observation I have done, the people who go out of the “closet”, who's parents have shunned them, have the -highest- risk of committing suicide.
But I'm thinking. If you are going to “end” it all, have you really thought this through?
Why waste it, when you could something meaning full with your life? Donate blood. Assist in building things. Try something completely different! Work! Create! Innovate! Improve!
You are a walking living being able to do THINGS that no inanimate object could do. But when you sever your own cord, you become a husk that eventually returns to the earth, and eventually, in time, forgotten and then obscured by History, and then... From dust to dust. We do not know, with our conscious, if there is an afterlife, or a rebirth: but one thing is for certain, We all will die at some point, but the question remains are you willing to risk it all for nothing? Suicide is the ultimatum escapism. But is there anything beyond, that will remain unanswered.
If you are, indeed thinking of suicide, but want help
; read what I'm about suggest next:
Deeply Evaluate your problems. Make a diagram, map or a brainstorm of your problems. Try solving them. One by one. Is there a difficult problem? Make it into smaller chunks and think of solutions. Out of ideas? Look for help. Ask help from your friends. From your family, if you can.
If the problem IS your family or loved ones? think. Silence maybe golden, but in some situations, you have to speak out. They are YOUR family after all and if they loved you in the past, they will regardless what they claim, listen, but not always act. Do keep it to the point and remain strong. If they remain unchanged, you'll have to learn to let them go, and LEARN from the mistake you made.
Is it Money? Work, refocus your time. Don't get a loan, unless you are doing an investment. If you live in a country that provides social security, apply for it, and move out of your current apartment to a cheaper one. “Downsize your self”. Then get any job you can get your paws on first. There are plenty of jobs in the job market that people do not want to do (cleaning, burger flipping, etc) but there is a LARGE demand for workers in these field. In fact, its sorta hilarious, but I've heard a lot of people with masters and doctorates flipping burgers at McDonald as a job while they look for a job in more … suitable areas. They pay enough for you to live by, until you find the education your looking for or even a better job.
Learn to adapt. The world does not revolve around you. It has NEVER revolved around anyone. And it never will. Adaptability has been the key-factor that has kept animals, as well humanity alive this far, and will keep it evolving until the end of time.
I hope my suggestions and insight helps.
Feel free to Note me or email me (will provide when asked ) if you want any mental assistance, I will attempt to help you with the best of my ability. Anything that goes through me will remain confidential between you and me and will not, by any means be told to anyone else, unless required by law. I'm no psycologist, I can try to help, and it always helps to discuss about your problems with someone.
Well I'm gonna have to go back to working on my programming projects.
