Kung Fu Panda 3: Spoiler-Free Review

I'm going to keep this brief.

If you waited these five long years, as I did, with huge anticipation to see the follow-up to the awesome Kung Fu Panda 2, I think you'll be disappointed by this entry.

All in all, as I watched, I felt so many moments where there was bad pacing, unnecessary filler (believe it or not), and convenient god-mode when needed. I don't like when these movies over-use montages as a way to speed up what could've been much more compelling content for the movie, for the sake of a shorter run time.

It just feels like they dumb things down and shorten it. Maybe its because they are so focused on making it a kids movie? Keeping the time to roughly 90 minutes per usual for a kid film for high turnover to make more money? I don't know.

I just walked out feeling like I won't remember much after a week.

To conclude, it looks like Kung Fu Panda 2 will still be the highest point of the trilogy thus far, and the reviews for 3 are higher for the moment, which is pretty mind-boggling to me. Maybe in five more years, they'll have re-learned what made Kung Fu Panda 2 so good and go back to that.

Well, here's hoping?? Kung Fu Panda 4... in 2021...

There were some serious cliches in the plot as well. I would really liked them to have shifted focus off of Po, to be honest.

Yeah, it felt like a very 'slapped together' movie. Plus the cliches could've been avoided, had they worked out a better, stronger story.

The Shrek series was the same way. The second was the high water mark-it had the best elements of the first and took a few chances in order to make it deeper. The third was the start of the downhill slope. Oh well. At least we've got the first two and really not every story can be a classic.

I agree with you. Shrek 2 was the best. I never saw Shrek 3 since my sister saw it and a bunch of other people told me to never see it, they thought it was really bad/boring. As for the fourth one, I did see that, and thought it was okay, but "meh" overall.

Best to Worst: Shrek 2, Shrek 1, Shrek 4, Shrek 3

You know the biggest problem with this franchise? WAY too many characters, and yet only one or two besides the title character gets any attention. The Furious Five are essentially there to fill up empty space, always have been, which is a waste of both the characters and their actors, especially Jackie.

This is pretty much how I feel. There's never enough development for any of the characters, aside from Po, and even in this most recent film, even he gets the shaft when it comes to genuine, believable development. Its a shame too that the Furious Five always get two or three lines apiece with each film, only Tigress is lucky to have more because of the subtle romance cues (of which there are also NONE OF in this third film, again ranking behind Kung Fu Panda 2 where Po hugged Tigress and I squeeled with delight).

Being fair, though, I shouldn't talk about this, as I'm just not a fan of the franchise as a whole. In fact, no movie ever has gotten me into more "movie arguments" than the first Kung Fu Panda, and they have been heated. So it's a surprise to me to find someone who agrees with what I find to be one of the biggest flaws of the franchise, how it has way too many characters and how almost none of them get any development whatsoever, because ultimately, the franchise has the word "panda" in the title, so they can't give anybody else any sort of limelight, even when they may be more interesting and compelling than the title character himself.

It was 'okay' but to be honest - I was literally bored with a lot of the movie. The villain is supposed to have some funny shtick, but it never works. At all. I didn't laugh or chuckle or really enjoy myself watching this third film. And this was also a packed theater, there was no energy or anything with this entire audience, because there was nothing for us to relate to on-screen aside from the poorly used familial cliches you've seen many times before on TV.

Honestly, it makes me really upset that this film isn't as good as it could've been. When the film focuses too much on Po, its no good.

I loved it since Im such a KFP fan, but agree that it seemed more forced and shallower than previous ones. Less epic. We were the only ones in the theater. It was good, but subpar compared to the others. At the same time I think the bilocation effect was well done and on point with Kai's jade powers and the community and emphasis on Po figuring himself out needed to happen after the previous movies' buildup- but after all the wait, wasn't worth it to be so excited ^^* I found the end to be wonderful but the rest just fell flat ;.;
