This fills in a few holes from what i remember back from teh mid 70's through the late 90's. I was firmly in the Gamer camp in the early years.

I thought Reed was dead - from cancer? I know he was in pretty bad shape at one time.

The medical treatment he got at the time actually worked. There's more information at his new website. He had a low profile until he and Kate got a contract to reprint and finish the story. It was a difficult time before the graphic novel was reprinted and finished as hardcover & trade-paperback collections (only a little over a year ago).

Yes, it was Kate Worley (died 6 June 2004) ... I was starting to think I'd shifted into a reality where both of them were either alive or dead (there may be one where they are both alive AND dead at the same time which is a neat trick), but I checked a calendar I use to keep track of such matters and found her. It's still a bummer...
