Are You Androgynous?
I was inspired by my discussion of this topic with
adoir to post this self-assessment from my old psychology textbook. I still have it because the school won't buy it back. Why? Well, they stopped making it. But not at the end of the semester, or once school was well underway, but within the first week of classes, so there were always people who never had a textbook. :P
First off, what is androgyny? Androgyny means "expressing both the 'masculine' and 'feminine' traits found in each individual. Rather than limiting themselves to rigid gender-appropriate behaviors, androgynous men and women can be assertive and aggressive when necessary, but also gentle and nurturing. Some people think androgyny us a new term for asexuality or transsexualism. However, the idea of androgyny has a long history to positive combinations of gender roles, like the yin and yang of traditional Chinese religions."
Anyway, the test sees what kind of personality you have based on your self-assessment of certain attributes. According to the same textbook, "modern researchers have found that masculine and androgynous individuals have higher self-esteem, academic scores, and creativity. They are also more socially competent and motivated to achieve, and exhibit better overall mental health (Choi, 2004; Hittner & Daniels, 2002; Venkatesh et al., 2004). It seems that androgyny and masculinity, but not femininity, are adaptive for both sexes." Note: I am not arguing any male superiority or anything like that. It does make sense, however, that these things could happen, as Western society tends to malign feminine qualities in favor of masculine ones. This bias can cause all kinds of psychological issues, and even if someone who is feminine doesn't have mental issues, they are more likely to have deficiencies in these areas because of what their culture may teach them.
Now, without further ado, is the test. Have fun!
Are You Androgynous? wrote:Social psychologist Sandra Bern (1974, 1993) developed a personality measure that has been widely used in research. You can take this version of Bern's test by rating yourself on the following items. Give yourself a number between 1 (never or almost never true) and 7 (always or almost always true):
1. _____ Analytical
2. _____ Affectionate
3. _____ Competitive
4. _____ Compassionate
5. _____ Aggressive
6. _____ Cheerful
7. _____ Independent
8. _____ Gentle
9. _____ Athletic
10. _____ Sensitive
Now add up your points for all the odd-numbered items; then add up your points for the even-numbered items. If you have a higher total on the odd-numbered items, you are "masculine." If you scored higher on the even-numbered items, you are "feminine." If your score is fairly even, you may be androgynous.
Since people will want to know, and it's on ma profile page, I got androgynous on the test, scores being 24 for odd answers (masculine) and 25 for even (feminine). Feel free to post your own scores!
Oh, and feel free to steal! Just make sure you give me credit! Naw, its okay, it'll just be neat to see this spread on FA. Interesting stuff, y'know?
