Well, if you're missing some tools, try looking at the "windows" tab... I have it for PC, and I think the toolbars should be laid out the same. They hide the layers tab, tool options, tools themselves... yeah, Gimp can be kinda strange.

It seems to be compatible with tablets, but it doesn't do pressure sensitivity, iirc. If you need help finding something specific, I'm sure we could figure it out.

I use gimp all the time ^_^ You don't want to start a drawing on there from scratch. Scan a sketch first, then use the trackpad to trace it and color. And the select tool if your friend XD

And use tutorials...or just okay around with it. Get to know the tools them you'll learn eventually :3
