Fun Musings on Zootopia (Mild, Non-Plot Spoilers)
General
I saw Zootopia last night, of course, and it was completely awesome, of course. Not that any of you need my recommendation, but it's a great film that's worth a watch. I bet you'd enjoy it!
It's funny... I'm fond of saying that I don't really identify as a furry, but it would be awfully hard to deny that I am one. I have a job and plenty of hobbies that are outside of the fandom, and it isn't something about me that my non-fandom friends even know about, though I clearly do enjoy the heck out of the fandom, and I spend a lot of time and money on it.
Anyway, it's easy to be in a sort of quasi-denial about it all, but then I go and see Zootopia, and the credits sequence grips me with the thought of "good lord, Gazelle is hot as hell. Look at those hips!" Whoops, turns out animal people are sexy! Caught myself being a furry, I guess. ^_~
What do you guys think? Do any of you have my same weird relationship with the fandom? "Oh, I'm not a furry, I've just gone to two conventions and I spend silly amounts of money commissioning pictures of the cast of anthros and quadrupeds I've dreamed up personalities for in my spare time." Have you ever been hit in the head with a reminder that you're a furry after all? Maybe that Orangina commercial from a while back? Tell me stories!

FA+

seen a lot of people talking about it being the Disney's Robin Hood of our generation, when it comes to getting people curious about the furry fandom
and ya, I grew out of being an active furry long time ago - but I still apreciated the movie: they had some really good character designs, using the differences in animals to great effect for visual gags and how they designed the zootopia city
and yes, Gazelle had dem hips - like... damn
As for hips, you'd have to look no further than Lizanne to see how much I appreciate them. ^_~
Anyway, although I'm planning on waiting for a DVD or Netflix release to watch it, Zootopia seems to be doing very well, so we're definitely looking at the film responsible for the next generation of furries. Hurray!
Unfortunately for me, though, I'm really attracted to pregnant women, but absolutely under no circumstances want children. ^_~
It'll be a great rental, I'm sure! I don't think it'll lose much from not being on a big screen, though seeing it in 3D IMAX was nice. I suppose you're right about the next generation of furries, too!
I think I know why I'm not very interested in humans. I haven't mentioned this to you yet, but I'm on the autistic spectrum, and among other things, it's very common for people on the spectrum to identify both more strongly with animals than humans, and also with fictional characters, and when a good amount of the media you get that strongly attached to right around puberty involves anthropomorphic animals...well, the end result really just seems inevitable.
Ahh, neat! I don't have any of that going on. Just your bog-standard neurotypical straight dude. Being an engineer, though, I've known and worked closely with lots of people at various places on the spectrum. We tend to get along pretty well, in my experience. ^^
It all started when I played an MMO where I got to play as a dragon. I started RPing there and grew to appreciate dragon rear ends. Probably from having almost a rear of playtime on that game and staring at a dragon butt for the vast majority of it, cuz that's where the camera was aimed. It just couldn't be helped >.>;
I don't consider myself one, but that is partially due to the negative connotation that comes with the word when used outside FA (although no one but people online have really asked me about it, nor does it come up in usual face-to-face conversation xD).
I like butts. Scaly butts, fluffy butts, and the occasional hooman butt. I may have a lot of dragon characters, but there's a Dryad or two mixed in there...and some others. Hot-headed dryad, dragon, ice monster in the shape of a dragon, a rock in the shape of a dragon that is a total dork, anthropomorphic feline, hiveminds.
Imo, 'furry' is an old term that has far too much baggage for me to try and redeem it in the eyes of others. I am just an equal opportunity butt-oogler who uses everyone as a pillow or couch, and I ask everyone to be so kind as to not limit the glory that is butt-oogling/couching to just 'furry' >:D
I hear you on "furry" being kind of a loaded word. Like all subcultures, there are parts of the fandom that a bunch of people otherwise in it wish would just fade quietly away. ^_~ There are a bunch of parts of the fandom that I don't dig on at all and would rather distance myself from, but it would be an awfully touch sell if I tried to convince anybody who knew what I did get up to that I wasn't one.
I guess that's the problem with being part of any niche subculture, though. You could be big into, say, Warhammer 40k, while really wanting to distance yourself from some of the personalities that tend to get into it.
Sounds like somebody played Horizons! I was an EQ player, myself. ^_~
I've tried EQ2, but never EQ1..not enough time in the day unfortunately Q_Q
Seems like all subcultures have their Goldshire? xD *WoW reference*
Generally any attraction to fantasy characters is toward its human half more than its animal half despite how interesting or personified animal traits are in fantasy and art.
I like the anthropomorphic arts due to its human attributes and it's animal traits pretty much just cause I enjoy the fantasy of it all.
My mind sorta translates what I see in a more human like thing when I try to look at or read about such characters and build an idea for the fictional personality.
I figure others do this too.
Generally I'm sorta saying its all fantasy and it's harmless I guess.
I don't refer to myself as furry, I consider my characters a bit of alter egos but still my characters and not the general fursona style thing which is just making an avatar anyway.
Furry culture kind of evolved with the internet after all so created a fictional avatar self kinda came with it.
It's a tad old hat not but I think that's how a lot of that stuff got started.
I'm kinda just rambling thoughts but generally I think anthropomorphic arts is more a human thing than one would assume sometimes.
I've never been to a convention before though I have wanted to if I could have managed it.
Trouble is i'd feel out of my element with the community.
Really just want to see the art and meet artists and all, its all about the art for me.
I do get referred to as a "furry" for liking anthropomorphic arts and dealing with the mature nature of most art sites but I think the open definition of "furry" just sorta blurs things away from the art.
I like to use "anthropomorphic art enthusiast" as a fancy way of explaining the art I enjoy.
I like the more heavy detailed art over the cartoon like stuff as well so I like to think I aim for a more sophisticated art lovers level of interests.
Eh again late night ramblings sorry but I'm sorta trying to make a positive point.
As for Zootopia I am curious to see if its a semi decent 3D cartoon movie as I find too many over used cliches and cheap trappings. Think I'll wait for it on a streaming service or blu ray though the characters do seem a bit interesting and I kinda like the idea of a police bunny for some reason lol.
But eh, arts is good arts and I like animals in art and mature arts is mature arts and it counts as an "art" thing so be mature about its, so there. *falls asleep on desk*
It's immediately impossible when you use "I" or "Me" within the context of your character. This is something people don't get yet because reasons.
I stole $53 from Grandma McSchittstick last week, however I do not indentify as a thief cuz trololol.
Actions louder than blah blah. Something something quacks like a duck.
