Had three removed last year. It's kinda like being really drunk. You won't remember much about it, but the recovery is worse that the operation.

Also, after the prescribed painkillers are gone, Ibuprofen is your best friend

But like arent you still awake when youre laugh-gassed? Dont you feel the whole thing? I wish i ciuld leave it in...i could deal with occasional pain once in a while..but dentist told me iys infected and will spread.

And theres a bad recovery? Cuz my bf went ahead and booked my appointment the day before ill be at fe....i guess i should reschedule huh? Have myself a party and good time at the con THEN go lol

You are awake, but you'll hardly remember it. I do remember a few parts of the extraction, but nothing lasting. Yeah, definitely book AFTER the con. The first day after surgery isn't so bad because of the pain meds, but theres a lot of swelling after. And you do have to stick cotton in your mouth for a few days until the bleeding stops. Chewings gonna be a pain in the butt for a couple weeks, advil takes some of the pain away

Wisdom teeth will deform your entire jaw and part of your skull if you leave them in. and it never stops getting worse, exponentially increasing in pain each year you *don't* remove them. Getting rid of them as son as possible is best because the younger you are, the faster it recovers and less pain.

Wow ... That's going back quite a while for me. But yeah, I had all four done at the same time in hospital.

I never got used to needles but I guess it wasn't bad. I make it a habit not to look when it comes to such things. Then I would describe it as if an ice pack was put on your hand. Felt dizzy, decided to close my eyes in hopes that would ease the feeling in my stomach (That's probably why they require an empty stomach ahead of procedure). Next thing I knew I was being told it was finished which was some 45mins later. Stayed in recovery a number of hours then sent home. Plenty of gauze stuffed in my mouth for obvious reasons. I believe Tylonal 3 was prescribed.

I don't know if this will happen or not for you. I found there was a bunch of dried blood in my nose. Most likely from the breathing tube put through there.

That's pretty much all I can think of about that adventure =)

Did you have to change the gauze? My dad was telling me after his procedure (like 30 yrs ago) they had him changing medical gauze that he had to stuff in the hole everyday until it healed..im guessing this is old practice but iunno

From what I understand, these days the holes would be filled so that the jaw doesn't shrink. The gauze would be for keeping pressure on the areas to control the usual bleeding afterward, if anything.

I would confirm that with the dentist just to be sure =)

You're in the operating room and they're doing things to you, then suddenly you're in the recovery room. You're disoriented for a minute or two while you sort out what just happened. Then the pain kicks in and it's pretty obvious what just happened. It's weird at first, uncanny, but it's not quite as weird if you go into the operating room expecting this.

thankfully everyones been super helpful and informative about the whole thing so im building up courage :P

General anesthesia is kind of a rough thing to do to a brain, but brains are amazingly resilient. Millions of people a year get "knocked out" and recover just fine. You will, too. The best thing you can do is believe that it'll be okay. And it will, honest!

I had mine pulled, and honestly it wasn't so bad. I wasn't knocked out though, I stayed up the whole time. It was only slightly uncomfortable, people blew it out of proportion.

however the recovery is a different story, The only thing you should eat is soup for at least a week, make sure to stop using guaze once the bleeding stops.

Most important, is to get one of those water toothpicks or something similar, because you'll need to wash out the holes left by your wisdom teeth. They'll take quite a while to fill in, and food WILL get stuck in there and rot and it'll make your breath really bad if you don't clean it twice a day. (just do it every time you brush)

Im guessing ill be taking a week off work to recover huh? I work talking on phones all day...cant imagine how thatll feel on my jaw after the whole procedure lol.

Omg how did you stay up the whole time??? Did they numb it beyond so you didnt feel it? Honestly im just paranoid that im somehow gonna feel it..im sure im getting myself worked up for nothing and once its done ill be like wow why did i panic so much...but meh

I had a lot of tolerance over the painkillers so it took 3 full injections directly into the gums to completely numb me, (I'm a big guy, it makes sense) and ointment based painkiller to apply said injections during the 15 minutes the surgery took. My entire jaw was numbed for hours after the surgery, so The only thing I felt was the pressure of hands and tools on my jaw. Oh and the sound of the teeth crunching and grinding and breaking (Bones breaking is definitely not for the faint of heart, especially because it's that much louder inside your mouth, where it resonates in your skull)

Despite the 3 injections, there were definitely areas of the mouth where the anesthetic wasn't affecting me, so I felt a little bit of pain in those spots. It wasn't intolerable though, more a nuisance. I've been put under, and it's exactly what time travel would feel like. one moment the surgery is starting, the next moment it's over. honestly the surgery wasn't nearly as uncomfortable as the ice cold feeling rushing through your veins and constant shivering because of the anxiety. (Wisdom teeth was my first surgery ever, so I was naturally scared as well)

The whole surgery could be described as a minor nuisance that doesn't go away for 15 minutes straight.

thanks so much for the comments...im feeling a little more calm and confident about getting it done. tbh i wanna go get it done asap now lol cuz the pain im having right now from the infection is becoming unbearable. antibiotics and advil EXTRA strength doing absolute jack for me.

im glad to hear its quick too. think they will let me bring my ipod? im sure i wont need it if im knocked out but yea

I'm pretty sure they'd allow it. Though personally I wouldn't bring it because I wouldn't want the wires to bug the surgeon and nurse (they'd prolly fall out as well)

They usually have a TV on and give you the remote when you're awake. (I left it on Cartoon Network playing Steven Universe)

And yea, You won't be talking for a few days. The holes in your mouth will hurt like hell if you open your jaw. But as it heals you'll be able to move it more and more again. Don't use a straw btw. The suction will mess with the holes and make you start bleeding. But that's over after a week.

I didn't use any painkillers during recovery at all. It really didn't hurt much unless I opened my jaw too much. Pain would be a 3/10 with 10 being the worst. Opening jaw too much was about a 7-8.
