I think it is pronounced Beren-steen, I just watched a couple youtube videos of the intro and that's how you pronounce it! And I used to read their books many times!!

When I was little I'm pretty sure I pronounced it 'bear and stain' but NOW I'd say it how you do XD

I remember them as a kid. I pronounced it Beren-steen as a kid. But it's actually Berenstain. http://www.berenstainbears.com I mention this because the Berenstein/Berenstain thing gave rise to a ridiculous internet theory that they were called Berenstein in an alternate universe.

Yeah, that's actually the reason I'm asking. I just stumbled onto the theory a few hours ago and freaked out. I KNOW it was spelled with an "e." And I've been sitting here, after absorbing the fact it says "BerenstAin" everywhere now, and after getting past the initial shock, I've been marveling at my own reaction to it. There have been many many words in my life that I grew up mispronouncing or spelling wrong, and when I was finally corrected I just felt like an idiot for getting it wrong for so long. Two examples of this would be I used to say "abulance" instead of "ambulance" and "demond" instead of "demon." If I had simply missed the correct spelling all these years, why don't I just feel like an idiot and correct myself? Me, my family, my friends, all remember the BerenstEin Bears, vividly and clearly without a doubt. Why? Why would we argue over pronounciation if it was written "stain" all along? It was always a case of people confusing it as "stien" instead of "stein" in my experience. Why do so many people have this feeling of KNOWING it was different?

Aside from all that, I clearly remember the image of it as "Berenstein" in the blocky, cursive font. It's like a logo. It's not just about misspelling, it's also that the shape looks all wrong when there's an "a" in it. It feels like if you went to the supermarket and suddenly saw labels that read Fulgers coffee or Tyde detergent. It's iconic. Something you grow up seeing over and over. It feels like this is a huge prank and I should be waiting for someone to admit there's a hidden camera.

This whole thing has legitimately freaked me out and I have no idea why I would react so strongly if it was all a simple misunderstanding. I don't want to go digging into theories too hard or anything. It's just the weirest, scariest sensation, especially since I'm far from being the only one.

I grew up reading the Berenstein Bears books. Do you remember (or have you heard of) the Serendipity series of children's books. They came out in the 1970's and have some nice illustrations.

I didn't have as many of those unfortunately, but yes, I love the Serendipity illustrations! :3

I had a lot of the books as a kid, as well as some of the videos as well. I also briefly watched the PBS cartoon, but lost access to a TV due to life circumstances. Nice stuff.

I never actually learned how to pronounce it, but I definitely noticed when I was a kid that it was spelled BerenstAin. So I assumed it was pronounced "bear-en-stain".
