It's fine as a sport. What annoys me are the huge egos that the fighters carry. I supposed it's necessary to promote their names and sell tickets but I can't stand the taunting, trash-talk, or the oneupmanship. You could add weigh-ins to the list. With their staged brawls and "grudges", they serve no purpose but to sell tickets.
I honestly don't care for it. For much of the reasons that bossdman spoke of before.
For me, it goes even further though. TO me Martial Arts is as much about Ethics as it is about the Training. Respect, Courtesy, Integrity, Self-Control. The people that go into the UFC cages appear to send most of those things flying out of the window and that REALLY rubs me the wrong way.
Now you might be thinking: "But this guy's a Pro Wrestling aficionado..." and you're right but there's a very big difference between Pro Wrestling and Mixed "Martial Arts": In Pro Wrestling the trash talk is an act (usually) and the guys are usually pretty nice to each other(with a few exceptions) when the spotlights and cameras are turned off.
agreed. I think they should call it mixed fighting or something else because its not befitting using the name martial arts, it doesn't represent the discipline, respect or honour in martial arts
I used to take boxing and found it to be quite fun other then being worked till your legs and arms gave out and then expected to deflect punches not long after. It can be very stressful on the body but knowing how to swing and duck is a useful skill since there's so much technique to fighting that most people don't really realize.
Can't say too much about MMA, it can be fun to watch but I prefer old school boxing.

As for a better name, I think "Free Fighting" might be the better thing to call it.
