this woman makes me ashamed of my state
I heard this the other day on my local NPR station. The HB2 thing has disappointed me bad, and this bit on the radio finally succeeded in ticking me all the way off.
It's nearly an eighteen minute long interview with Tami Fitzgerald, the Executive Directer of the North Carolina Values Coalition (and ardent supporter of HB2)..........wait around for that six n half minutes in!
What an insight to the people responsible for my state's bigotry.

The second audio clip is shorter and from a real psychiatrist Jack Drescher.....and wow! Straight from someone who helps write the handbook on mental illnesses that Tami claims to quote.
Tami Fitzgerald....you are using fear and disinformation to spread your ideology.
Hate is not a Value.
And another thing....if NC Republicans care so much about the conditions of public school restrooms......then why do I remember years of broken bathroom doors that wouldn't latch....or the one toilet that never worked....and the "handicapped stalls" that had two toilets....or the one toilet at the end of the row with no door or paper dispenser. All that was just in the Main Building.

This is societal and it's up to society to change things. Few want that responsibility. It means they are accountable and they become the targets of those that didn't get their way.
The NCRNC is not responsible for the condition of the facilities. That's the School Board/BOE. Take it up with them. They determine where the money goes or not... That includes the condition of the buildings. We're seeing the same problems with school builds and they are less than 10 years old. To add insult to injury, we've just been saddled with another 1 cent SPLOST to our taxes to build another high school 3 miles outside of town. Why? The outgoing mayor wanted his name on a building.
Honestly, I don't want an individual claiming to have identity crisis with regards to their gender coming into the woman's rest room to do their business in the stall next to me. Solve this by creating a 3rd restroom for the gender conflicted. Then sit back and watch the fur and feathers fly.
To me, it shows just how screwed up this society has become.
You are correct. Hate is not a value. Since when is declaring that men and women will NOT be going into the opposite sex's bathroom or sharing the shower stalls after gym class hate?
Nope. You got plumbing on the outside, you go to the little boy's room. You got plumbing on the inside, you go to the little girl's room. None of this here's switching it up.
Agreed the NCRNC are not responsible for the condition of the facilities.
However, when They pass sweeping legislature overnight in a secret session......(simply in response to a Charlotte ordinance that provided protection for those individuals using the restroom that conformed to their gender identity)......and then claiming it's protecting women from men in restrooms and showers.....I ask where was this concern for our facilities before?
If They can't afford in Their budget the simple upkeep in the restrooms we already have, how can I expect Them to refurbish the place for a third restroom? The problems I recall certainly weren't from anyone with a gender identity crisis. And other than the random stupid boyish prank of going into the girls room, there hasn't been a rash of men entering the women's room. I'd be more concerned over cameras stuck in the holes in the wall...no?
My point was that if this is the best Their concern can do for us then They should just butt out.
I think it's hateful to refuse someone the ability to use the bathroom, given their other options will be shame or ridicule. Some of my boy friends hated using the restrooms at school. That was where the worst bullying would occur. So understand the environment you'd be throwing these individuals in.
And as for your matching plumbing rule....my very pregnant friend Sheepy had to use the men's room the other day because some sour puss wouldn't let her cut in line for the ladies room.
Putting aside the issue of that secret session and the results, I will address restrooms in businesses and facilities and pregnant woman.
I do business with quite a few restaurants and businesses that have limited bathroom facilities. One restaurant has only one bathroom with a single toilet and on the door it is clearly marked men and women. People politely wait their turn and when it's open, they go in and do their business. I do a lot of business in fabric stores and farm supply stores that have restrooms for men and women but as big as the room is, there is the one toilet and push comes to shove, using the other restroom is necessary.
Now last thing I will relate is the head shared by men and women... I was the only woman in a crew along 31 other men. The head had a toilet in a stall and a urinal. This barge, built during WW2 had the one head. We didn't have mixed crews in WW2. I had to adapt. Given that I was the minority and guys got to pee like girls, so long as no one tried to open the stall door and crawl in there with me, I had no beef.
I've had 3 kids and while I was pregnant, no one ever denied me access to the restroom. My youngest is 24. Times have changed.
As to your friends, I can't help them, but I understand the environment when I was one of the first women to enter the nuclear power Navy in the days of Hymen Rickover. I know about the harassment and the ridicule and the hate because I was taking a billet from a man. The first man to try and shove his hand up my rear got a Vibram soled steel toed boot to the face. He and his friends never dared repeat it again. I never put him on report, I just kicked his miserable ass all over the lower deck compartment.
If your friends are still in school, have them address the student council and move through that to get things changed and that includes the crappy restrooms. Take pictures (since it seems everyone has a camera phone these days) and show parents, teachers, the BOE, the newspapers, whoever will listen. Shame the establishment into compliance. Otherwise, nothing will get done and your friends will live in fear.
You learned to adapt to unisex facilities. You became a strong woman who knows how to defend herself in a situation. One would think you wouldn't feel threatened by those with differing parts from yourself in the stall next to you. That maybe some tolerance has worked it's way in there somewhere? Surely Caitlyn Jenner doesn't make you nervous in the bathroom? As mentioned in the second audio in the article they are not always conflicted or in crisis about themselves and certainly pose no danger.
Thank you Yonaka_Yamako, but I wasn't asking you to help, I was hoping you would listen and open your talented mind.
And as for your advice as to what my friends should do....as mentioned before the response we received when confronting those in charge...."lack of funding". As for the discrimination in Federally funded school, they at least have the power to invoke Title IX. You're off the hook.
