with this being a recession.anyhing you can do to keep the price down on what youre selling will help with sales I think. I prefer original art and commissions but art cds or low cost portfolios can be good too though comic book formats are usually even better as a value to the buyer.im sure you could print more of things while at the con so I wouldnt go too crazy with what you bring but if you sell out before sunday it would be wise to make more while there.

If you produce prints, you should do so in a small supply so you can see how the masses take to it. Experiment on the subject matter so you can have variety, because you would have to be a Z-Class idiot to not try to have a little something that everyone could enjoy that is within your comfort zone to produce. When making prints, it's also best that you make certain that the images are Never-Before-Seen so it would be a new introduction to the masses. If you plan to make prints of previous images, you should go for the ones that you know of that has drawn in attention since it's more likely they will sell. Still, I recommend that you make new material though, even if it is a small quantity. Make sure the quality for it all is pristine & jubilant and you'll get much out of it.

For commissions, it's always a must for demonstrating what you can do and what the commissioner will expect to get. Be it badges (Which are big sellers) or not, Commissions should always be taken, but within sane limitation of your natural performance. Only a careless artist will take more than they can handle, for which always end up with a series of backlog that can be a horrendous strain for both parties and can lead to far more unpleasant interactions. In this regard, you should train yourself to work faster in a shorter time frame so you can get to the next commission without any limitations other than personal needs that are factual. The less stress you give yourself for getting things done, the more time you'll have for yourself once the tasks are concluded.

For a portfolio, it's a random at best. If the subject doesn't catch eyes, then it's more likely to flop. Giving sneak previews is the way to go for making a successful Portfolio, so you'll have to test the waters and work alongside personal interest along with those you wish to sell to. Catering to the fans/potential buyers is one thing, but making sure it's also to your personal interest is just as important and encouraging.

If you have any other talent that you do that you could possibly make a profit with and merge with the focal point of your merchandise, consider throwing it in and see how it is taken. Some make food items, CD's and figurines, so the possibility of catering to more than just hand-drawn artwork is limitless. Custom-made items are also key to this. is one of the best I've seen that has utilized this concept to the fullest and has sold out on plenty of occasions, so taking her practice as inspiration is more than recommended. If you want to gain some form of fame and recognition through your work, best to show what you can do and make absolutely certain that everything you produce is of nothing short than the best you can offer, no matter how small it may seem.

Well, I'm going to try and do a small Katrina folio, a Female Dragon folio (no name ideas yet) and as many of my.. unique hybrids as I can manage (there's a list). They won't be from the same world as Astrid, but I rather enjoy making chimera characters and I have some pretty unique concepts in mind!

Well, thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm trying to aim for maybe 2 smallish portfolios, and a series of prints (all new) as well as con sketches. It's a bit late for me to try for some unique merchandise but it's definately something to consider for next year (Fimo can be your friend!).
I'll have my work cut out for me getting all the colour done though.. Hmm, I better get to it!

As long as it isn't the size of a door.. $10 I'd say. Assuming I can get everything I want done for the con, at least one of my folios will be cheaper than that ($8, 5 pics, half page panels), and I'll have a good selection of colour prints for $10 a piece too. The second folio will be about $12 but I havn't decided yet (8 pics, not sure about size).

I heard that prints don't always sell, but on the other hand they could serve as the "impressing" art while having some available to sell. Having said that, I'd love to meet you in person :D
What sort of pics did you have in mind for showing?

Well, my school of though is to have portfolios at a low price because they'd be physically smaller than prints. As to what I want to have ready for AC, look at the post I made about 4 comments ago. I did manage to get time off work for the trip, now the only thing I need to worry about is getting my passport in time..
