Post-Event Status Update (Weasyl, commissions, ect)
WELL, THAT WAS FUN, WASN'T IT, FOLKS!?
Anyways, I expect the big security breach has left everyone a bit shaken, understandably. No, I haven't completed any work while it was out, as I was recovering from a rather spectacular jaw infection that caused me quite a bit of pain. I'm working on getting back to previous production levels (Weekly intake of 4 commissions, and output of 10-12)
Now, only an idiot would trust their livelihood entirely to this site, and I have been that idiot up til this point, so I am in fact spreading out a bit. I've set up a spot on FN, BUT, I would like to primarily move to Weasyl, cuz it's the most like a functioning, proper furry art site.
MY WEASYL SITE IS HERE https://www.weasyl.com/~strype
No, I'm not abandoning FA (yet), I've still got a good number of customers here for the time being, and ultimately my primary gallery will be dependent on where the majority of my business is. And yeah, a lot of peeps say "Oh, but Weasyl has no activity!" hey, FA had that problem while Deviantart was a primary hub for the furry community, and look what happened! Ghandi once said "Be the change you wish to see in the world" so, if the only problem we're having with Weasyl is the population, the solution is obvious. It's a good site, has some nice features that elevate it above FA in my perspective. Good people running it from what I've heard. So why the heck not, right?
FA's been good to me, not gonna lie. If not for this site I might not have been able to quit my dayjob, and I'm thankful for that. I just get the feeling that this place is starting to show its age, the cracks are getting worse and there's a pretty horrible smell coming from the basement, and the security issues we just experienced might be a sign that hey, maybe it's time the community resettle somewhere a bit safer and saner.
ALSO, if you want a commission, comment below! I'll go through the list every weekend and pick a few, note you and we can sort out details. Current going rates are $175-$250 USD for a single character full colour thigh up pic, depending on the detail involved
COMMISSIONS (the fullsize huge scenes, not the ones I'm doing nowadays)
1/ Rogern (inked, restarting colour)
2/ 9Lion (pencilled, plus one other)
3/ Mechaman
4/ Chazore (pencilled)
5/ yutrah (inked)
6/ rageki (inked)
7/ Twitch The Dragon (inked)
8/ Kipeo
9/ Opeoaslam

Good luck on getting better from the infection! D:
I'm thinking about moving to either Weasyl or Tumblr. I already have half the followers on tumblr that I have on FA, but it's way too easy to get someone's tumblr deleted... so, I guess Weasyl it is, and hopefully FurryNetwork will do well. It certainly looks pretty good right now.
For all intents and purposes, FA has lost my trust.
FA is the LARGEST by far. Not all artists and enthusiasts will go to Weasyl, Inkbunny, Sofurry and so on... Some numbers dislike other pages for a plethora of reasons and the community will be fragmented considerably. If I were a teen or in my early twenties again, I wouldn't mind burning some lifetime by taking part in multiple communities to track down pictures and artists, but at this point I don't feel like subscribing to even more pages.
In regards to the Weasyl discussion, it still has a long way to go to overtake FA.. But give it a few years and it just might happen.
On the plus side, they're apparently rolling out a new backend soon, which will render the source code leak less powerful.
Hell, even though I don't make a living here, I've spread to the FN and Weasyl sites, just to be able to either communicate with folks I've commissioned or find folks that have moved there full time. May as well start going to the other places, and giving them useful feedback in order to either force FA to do better, or to go through a "death by a thousand cuts" (which is the demise I predict for FA, slow and painful to all involved unfortunately).
On the tangential subject of commissions though, I would be interested in a mechanized/action thigh up if the character is of interest when you do your weekly review: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/19820806/
V/R,
Mag.
If all else fails i think furry network has a lil more success rate to becoming big then weasyl. But thats just a personal opinion.
But hey there is also tumblr too to spread out to for audiences, i hear some artists are doing well there too business wise.
In the mean while, imagine that oh-pick-me commission sign here for as much as I can bribe you to do ;p
As for weasyl, if I didn't personally know the owners, I'd have a lot less reservations about it.
anyways, i hope you are doing well again :D
But yes, peeps shouldn't only go to sites "when FA is down"
That's WHY they have little traffic.
Sure, people can have their preferred site for their base of operations, but everyone should have accounts and post anywhere they can, well known or not.
Following you there, and hope that jaw heals up mang, it's very useful for things! :o
I have a decaying tooth that has already caused two cases of bacterial infection in my jaw.
The first one caused me so much pain i couldn't sleep for 4 days straight...
In case you're still suffering from pains, Get Well Soon.
DA later implemented a "no porn" policy which also drove up traffic to this site since it was new and "hip" despite having Yiffstar at the time; but that had a reputation for being a site for stories not so much artwork. History tends to repeat. Perhaps in time FA will too follow suit to the likes of Furnation and VCL. I think if it happens it will take a fair bit more time. There's still too many complacent people here willing to forgive and forget and who turn a blind eye to the politics behind those running the site that have enabled the problems that exist with site security in the first place.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
Every major site has it's issues, because they're big and people expect much from them. And they become a target for hackers and the like because they are a central hub for others to congregate to. Sites like weasyl and all work great now and they have good quality, but I'm fairly certain that if/when they reach the point of becoming as big as FA they'll be plagued with the same issues, or variations of these and then we'll bitch and moan about that site.
If say, Runescape or World of Warcraft was hated to the same degree as the Furry community, I guarantee the big community sites would get hit as much, and as hard, as FA does.
That's where I'll be moving primarily from now on. It's by far the best designed of the 4 major sites available, and is actually run by people proven to be able to run a business properly, and provide user security to the level you'd expect from a modern website.
Oh a commissio!? I does need some mecha Shambourneesssimg
Aaand still interested in nabbing another commission off you at some point if you would have particular interest in doing one!
I'd take a slot for a commission if there's still some space.
anyway, it's cool to see you back in action!
I know for me, on the consumer end, I have a list of over 700 accounts I "watch" but after 9 years on the site that is an artificially high number as many, even most of them no longer regularly post, entirely aside from the fact that I do not necessarily unwatch when someone creates a new account and moves because the system has no way to rename an account.
Personally, I will be here, socially, until they turn the lights out, but I wonder how many of those "watchers" in the statistics won't follow to Weasyl (or wherever) because they don't, currently, do anything at all.
Looking to spend about 150$
