I think there's a lot of negativity towards FA right now and there is a lot of animosity towards the staff for perceived wrong doings and/or oversights. So here's my opinion.
The people that did the damage were members of this fandom. It was probably some petty angst against the site or the staff done for the lulz, and it resulted in people having a lot of accounts on many different sites compromised. So if they were trying to "white knight" things, well, they kind of failed since everyone and not just FA itself got screwed.
So the aftermath.
Realistically, I think the only way to make FA secure is to completely code it from scratch. You have so many people now with complete copies of the site. Hell, there's been complete copies found online and who's to say whether the FA you are viewing is legit or not. I'm not going to say to abandon the site, but if you continue to use FA: Use a password unique to this site.
Anyway. That's all I've got. Go about your business.

FA may be the most popular, but it's also the most broken. Just saying.
Most artists won't leave FA because they get the most exposure here. And most commissioners/watchers won't leave because most of the artists are here. It's a vicious cycle.
