Furry Down Under 2016
I had high hopes for FurDU and it delivered. I went up to the Gold Coast on the 26th of May the day before the convention. When I arrived at the Mantra on View there where fursuiters hanging out in the lobby fooling around. I checked into my room after the receptionist sent me to the wrong room. I went down to take some photos of the fursuiters in the lobby and I got a few shots. I went out for dinner and went back to my room to sleep until the next day.
I awoke on the 27th of May and went down to have some breakfast at the hotel's restaurant because I was with the convention I saved five dollars off the cost of breakfast. I went and got a coffee at Starbucks and came back to the hotel in time for the registration. The registration line took half an hour and by 10:30 AM I had my con badge. I stood around the chill out area and took some more photos of the fursuiters arriving for the first photo shoot. I went to the "My First Con" panel and I started to feel less nervous. I went out and hung out for a bit more and then went to the end of Pepper Coyote's panel. I purchased three of Pepper Coyote's CDs because you got a certified art badge when you got all three. I retired for dinner and returned for the opening words. After the opening words I stayed for Pepper Coyote's first Australian performance. Pepper's music was grand and I loved it.
I had purchased some Red Knot Shiraz wine and Kahlua on the dinner break and drunk most of the wine to help me loosen up for the first dance. I went to the dance that had a Blue Dragon as the DJ followed by
noshyena. I had a great time and danced the night away. I love seeing the fursuiters dancing and I wanted to dance with a certain fursuiter but I was too shy. I got back to my hotel room and checked the FurDU Facebook and spotted the post for the Lupe fursuiters Photo shoot planned for 10 AM 28th of May. I retired to sleep but I could only sleep for two hours.
I awoke on the 28th of May and had breakfast at the hotel and went down to the lobby to wait for the Lupe suiters to turn up. While I waited some of the furry photographers turned up as well and we talked together. The Lupe suiters started to filter down from their rooms and us photographers pounced like foxes into action. The Lupe suiters formed up and we headed down to Surfers Paradise Beach. On the way me and the other photographers took heaps of photos of the Lupe suiters. We arrived at the beach and had a beautiful photo shoot with one of the photographers giving directions to the fursuiters. This was my highlight of the convention because at this photo shoot you could just rock up with your camera and snap away.
I returned to the convention and went to the photographers panel. I was disappointed by the panel because the person running it could not get his camera to work with the projector. The projector was out of focus and the person running the panel said he specialized in candid photos but only showed us posed shots. He was too unprepared for his panel because he didn't even have his photos from the first day of the convention to show us. I understand if it's you first panel but if it's about photography make sure your visual aids and you camera work right before you run the thing.
I then hung out in the chill out area and took a couple more photos. I went out for dinner and returned to the tail end of furs against humanity. I attended Pepper's second performance where he was chucking cans of beer around in between songs. He then made a hotel worker leave when he sung his song about horse dildos. I loved it he is so tall even more so in fursuit. I preloaded on grog and went to the second dance and danced with my gay pride band on my wrist. I love that I could be out of the closet at the fur con. I was encouraged by seeing openly gay furs slow dancing and cross-dressing together. I saw a fursuiter being lead around on a lead by a another fur. I wish I had a lover like that. I danced with a wolf suiter and another furry for part of the night. At 2 AM we had to leave and the poor suiter collapsed on a chair after the dance. On the way back up to my room someone in the lift said he had watched me dance and that I was a good dancer. That was a ego boost.
On the last day of FurDU the 29th of May I attended the fursuit games and videoed part of them. I enjoyed the fursuit games but I was still a bit tired from dancing last night so I was sitting on the sidelines for most of the games. The fursuit twister was a tie with two suiters evenly matched. I went to the book panel and then the fursuit panel both were good and I learned about a fursuit maker I didn't know about before.
After dinner I returned to the convention and videoed the fursuit dance comp. At the fursuit dance comp there was Muttasaur
muttasaur and Flow Fox
friendoflow as well as others I liked the dancer furs. It takes a lot of guts to put on a performance in-front of a crowd.
I went to the closing words and then the charity auction. I was determined to bid on something at the auction. When a won a bid I jumped up and decked a furry artist sitting on the ground (The chair was wet with sweat from the dance comp fursuiters.) with my GoPro on it's tripod. A true derp moment in my book. I won the bid on a box fox and a umbrella. The rest of the auction went well but we didn't raise more money then last year's one.
After the auction I returned to my hotel room to finish my drinks before the dead dog dance. I took my GoPro to the dance this time and got some footage of the dancers and myself dancing like a fool. The box fox came off my belt loop and a fur found it and handed it back to me. We where kicked out by the hotel at 12 AM. I went back to my room and got a case of the feels and PCD. I started crying because the convention was over until next year.
It was my first furry convention and I had the time of my life. I am currently planning to go to ConFurgence in January because I need more furry conventions in my life.
