Quick Information About Leothauns
History:
In the beginning, there was Light.
The planet of Qualdralis has always been bathed in the light of its star Altura, named by Leothauns for their goddess. The Light Leothaun Altura is believed to have had a sort of hand in the evolution of their kind, and is known as one of the very few Light Leothauns. Light Leothauns were regarded as gods, though the actual truth of their biology has always been unknown; the Light Leothauns are now simply myths and legends.
The fossil record of Qualdralis suggests that the very early Leothauns ran on four legs. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it is hypothesized that their ancestors evolved weight bearing wrists very early in their history, and became the masters of land rapidly. Eventually their forelimbs shortened and they began to walk upright about half of the time. And finally they became completely bipedal.
When their brains got big enough for more advanced intelligence, they began to experience more curiosity. Their tribes began to disperse in all directions; as they began to explore the planet, it is said that Altura planted a seed within the Leothauns. They became so in tune with nature now that they began to learn to control it. As they diversified based on their environment, their power began to grow.
Settlements of Leothauns sprang up in jungles, forests, plains, beaches, mountains, deserts, and so on. The Leothauns that lived there, over time, began to adapt. While the Leothauns never underwent breed-restrictive speciation, they began to form subspecies. Thus, the different types of Leothauns came to be.
In modern times, Leothauns live everywhere from caves to villages to cities. They have societies that range from primal to political. Every settlement is different, as is every inhabitant.

Biology:
Leothauns are bipedal, though Jungle Leothauns are small enough to run on all fours while chasing prey. Their opposable thumbs allow them to use tools, and their joints have hypermobility. Their bones are extremely elastic; broken bones are incredibly rare for a Leothaun. As such, they tend to be very flexible and are able to survive hard hits and long falls.
All Leothauns retained their ear rims, and have rounded ears that funnel sound, giving them extremely good hearing. The nose takes air in from the front and blows it out to the sides. Their largest fangs and claws are all retractable.
The gestational period for a Leothaun is about six months; however, their litters became greatly reduced as their size increased over millions of years. Their litter size is usually only one; twins, however, are not rare; though identical twins are. Incubation is entirely internal, and they give live birth. Leothaun females produce milk for their young. Biparental care seems to have appeared when Leothauns began the transition into bipedalism.
A Leothaun brain has five lobes; frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and a very recently discovered and yet to be named fifth lobe growing right in the center of the frontal lobe. It is unknown what the fifth lobe does.
Politics:
Each tribe, village, and city tend to have their own chief, governor, etc. However, as Leothaun populations began to grow larger, each subtype ended up having a more formal leader to represent their type’s different needs.
For example: Sand Leothauns had more need for water imports, while Mountain Leothauns needed strict mining laws. The different types of environments require different points of attention, so it made sense to have representatives. However, the representatives’ power is limited, and their ways of being elected vary.
The Mountain Leothauns choose an elder from their number, the Snow Leothauns have general elections, and the Volcano Leothauns have fights between warriors.
Miscellaneous Facts:
While Leothauns are very respectful of their animal companions on Qualdralis, and while they understand their biology is that of the animal kingdom, they do not consider themselves to be on the same level of intelligence. Therefore, it is highly insulting for a non-Leothaun to refer to them as an animal.
Religion:
Leothauns have a polytheistic belief system with multiple gods and goddesses. Their main spiritual deity is a mother goddess that all of the others branch off from. Each community is represented by either a lesser elemental god or goddess as all of the entities are related to another thus symbolizing peace and unity. Their mother goddess, a Light Leothaun known as Altura. Most Leothauns believe Altura's essence is within the Blue Relic that the Snow Leothauns have possession of and watch over. The Blue Relic is made out of strange empowered blue crystal and has lighter glowing runes all over the surface of it. According to the Leothauns, this essence allows the healing of wounds and the purging of illnesses. Many believe that the healing properties of the relic are a gift from Altura herself. Others follow different beliefs and don't follow the normal path.
