I FEEL it's pretty asinine when people have fursuits and a fursona and even draw furry art but don't consider themselves furries because of the negative stigma that comes with furries. Don't disown a piece of yourself because people are closed minded lil shits, FUCKING OWN IT. The reason these labels exist is so we can relate to one another, go to a furry convention with your fursuit and then try to have a conversation with someone starting with. "I'm not a furry" It'll get awkward real quick.
It's sad people find it so hard to be yourself of course..being yourself is possibly the hardest. I understand you can't exactly go to you're job and be like IM A FURRY LOOK AT THIS PORN. But like with friends....I don't know people are weird and counter productive.
If you don't consider yourself a furry, why? Remember this is MY opinion anyone else feel free to also state yours or counter my argument if you have a good point!

One of my best friends use to be a furry and he gave all of his characters away and quit because of the stigma that comes with being a furry.
Even to this day he loves furry art but refuses to come back. :/
I try my hardest to do what I like it's not easy to love things society has a negative stigma with.
But the more you are yourself the less shits you give about other peoples OPINIONS. (people forget opinions aren't fact)
And people look up to you for that.
It is hard sometimes but you have to think of it this way;
You can be fake as fuck and have fake as fuck friends. OR you can be yourself, and sure maybe be a bit weird, and have people who truly accept you for you instead of who they THINK you are.
I'm like you, I dont give two shit what anyone thinks. I'm openly a pansexual polyamorus furry and I get hell for it but fuck them. I have one life to live and i'm going to enjoy it the way I please gosh dammit. lol.
I know a guy who ONLY rps and hangs out with furries on social media and things like second life and IMVU. Has an F-list where he says he'll ONLY rp with other furries. Has a sona and has a shit ton of art, Loves furry porn and just basically does EVERYTHING a furry does except own a fursuit and go to conventions. Then claim they're not a furry solely BECAUSE of the bullshit surrounding furries. I always thought that was not only fake as hell, but silly as fuck. Like I like a crap ton of things people think I'm fucking weird for or look at me funny. It's called surrounding yourself with REAL FRIENDS who know you and don't give a shit about your silly little hobbies. Hell my last job EVERYONE knew I was a furry and I wore my mangoisland kigu to the halloween party there. Before the place got shut down, people were REALLY wanting to see my fullsuit when it was finished and they were all over me for pictures and stories after I came back from FWA.
Sure some people are going to bash you for it, but I say fuck em. Those aren't people you should give a shit about or hang out with anyway. They petty. Fuck em. Do you. It's 2016 and we're STILL on that 'let's hide being furries' crap. That's so sad.
My co-workers know too and they are totally accepting of it because they realize its just a stinking hobby.
There are people who take things too far in every fandom and we are no exception, but that doesnt mean we should be ashamed. We should show the world that there are more normal furries than there are weird ones but its hard when its so negitive.
My bad if it came off that way though.
I stated what a furry was, It's not an Opinion. Its a fact a furry is JUST a fan of anthropomorphized animals. Like a brony is someone who is a fan of ponies. That's it.
But you have nothing to prove to me, just like you have nothing to prove to anyone else, although its easier to enjoy things without feeling shame in them.
Now what you stated basically "Furry is someone who believes they're an animal" That is true in a sense, Some furries are therian but not all furries are. And not all therians are furries." (yes you are correct in your statement that the negative stigma came about because people assume the terminology for furry is fully opinion based) Thus why I said the most general factual definition is someone who is a fan of anthropomorphic animals. That is how the term came to about. A fandom created from the love of Anthros because that is the only characteristic that is always apparent in a furry fan. To assume more of the term furry is an opinion in that aspect you are correct but to assume all furries are therian is untrue.
Understandably it was a miscommunication.
Like i've never been one to be ashamed to be a furry. I use to wear wolf tails to school in high school because I thought they were beautiful and cool. I got picked on alot for it but I would either ignore it or just fuck with people.
Like I had a girl once ask me "Why do you wear a dog collar?" And I told her "Because my boyfriend is kinky and he likes it that way." XD It wasnt true, but it shut her up lmao!
I guess what i'm saying is there is no sense in being ashamed because you're going to get shit for something in life no matter what, so you may as well get shit for being yourself.
Personally... I identify as a human..... but I find furries to be attractive and am drawn to them....
Nothing wrong with being a human and liking furries
Therian- person who thinks they're an animal.
Furry - fan of anthropomorphic character.
My boyfriend is this way and it's really fucking awkward. I stay at his house to go to certain meetups in my local community, and he's too ashamed to tell his friends/family. So when I bring my fursuit over to his parents' and I'm questioned about it, I'm put in a spot I don't want to be in. I would tell them the truth but I don't want to embarrass my boyfriend with my interests, even though he shares the same ones. Ugh.
I also haven't been up to his college and met his roommates, but I've talked about going to meets around there too and I flat out told him I'm not hiding who I am just to impress some college kids. They can fuck right off with their bigotry. And he should not consider them his friends if he's too afraid to tell them that he likes anthro animals. Like, god's sake.
Sorry for the rant but it's like jfc xD
Anytime I feel safe I claim the Fandom, make sense?
I think it is best to ask someone personally and nicely why before saying they should own it. Because it may be that they simply don't feel as strongly, ya know?
Also realize this is my OPINION, and I did ask what other peoples opinions were. IF you find yourself offended by my opinion it is probably because I am blunt and straight forward. I absolutely can't stand fake personalities, quite frankly I find people who do things to be "Cool" tasteless. Though I was guilty of that when I was younger. SO being the blunt person I am I wanted to know if there were more reasons why people are afraid to show their "True colors" so to speak.
IF they do not feel as strongly or do it for their own safety, That's for them to say, because that is their OPINION. (And remember, you don't have to agree with my opinion and you can be by all means offended by it. But then I say we just agree to disagree)
Me personally: I accept being a furry. I share it with friends and family. People who know me know what I draw/do/like.
You wanted to know what other people think, I gave insight. I can't tell because it is a text conversation, but I am getting the feeling you're insulted by my comment? I tried hard to make it as non-bias as possible, giving my thoughts on what other people have told me on the subject. So, if you took it as an offensive thing, I apologize. I just gave my opinion on the matter.
Just cause one is a fan of anthropomorphic characters don't fully make them furry because by that logic everyone is a furry cause everyone likes Tom and Jerry, bugs bunny, etc etc and they are anthropomorphic animals/characters. But not everyone is a furry so being a furry truly has more to it then being a fan of anthropomorphic characters/animals and that secondary reason is different for each person so it hard to pin point why everyone who is a furry is a furry.
I don't actually consider myself a furry. I love the community, and think furs are some of the kindest, most generous and sweetest people on the planet, but I can't say I'm a member of the community in that way. I have a fursona, but have since I was a kid, and just feel like it's the best way to interact with furs in the community.
I enjoy all types of art, but I think my drawing furry art stems from a love of cryptids. I have quite a number of characters that're animal/insect/human hybrids, but that's because they're based on cryptid/folkore creatures. Also helps that the furry community is very supportive when it comes to all forms of art. I also draw a lot of Pokemon, which is fairly well received within this community. I've also just never been the type to see an anthropomorphic character and say "that's furry". It's just another character in my eyes.
But I'm not connected enough to my fursona to use it as something other than an alias for my art. I have other characters I better identify with and have cosplayed before. I don't see myself doing things like buying/making a fursuit and wearing it to conventions or gatherings. It's just not my style. But I don't see anything wrong with being a furry, and like I said, they're some of the nicest people.
It's a shame they have such a negative reputation as a community, when I think it's entirely unwarranted.
I don't particularly consider myself a furry. For me, I honestly don't truly have a fursona- most of the characters that I've tried to make as a "fursona" simply became more characters- but ones that share some traits that I have.
I've tried owning fursuits- and to me, it was just... Cosplaying? (Albeit with original characters instead of copyrighted ones from games).
I think the fandom is unique, certainly, and there are a ton of really nice people! I admire many of the crafts and skills that people in the fandom have.
But for me, I've always been a writer- and I've also always been incredibly in love with mythology (particularly the monsters and beasts in mythology) and cryptids and all kinds of "fantastical" stuff like that- and I think that's where many of my characters stem from.
I'm equally (if not even more so) interested in real life animals and biology. Animals fascinate me- I like seeing all the adaptations they have vs humans, I like seeing how their social structure works, etc.
I feel like that's where a lot of my characters also stem from- creating hybrids/mash-ups of species that could look and could behave somewhat similar to if they were really real. (I think the term I'd be looking for is "believable fantasy"?)
IDK, it's one of those things that I'm kinda on the fence about.
Another example (if it makes sense) is that I'm a fan of MLP. (To be fair, I've liked it since the early seasons- not just the recent ones). I have collected some merchandise, as I generally collect merchandise from things that I'm a fan of.
But personally, I don't see myself as a brony or whatever? I just see myself as someone who enjoys the show.
The term "brony" to me tends to make me think of people who go a step above just being a fan of the show- they're the ones who are fanfiction writers and readers, who've got a bunch of pony ocs, who wear the clothes at least one day a week, etc.
I'd say a better term would be "rabid fans"? I guess that's what I think of when I see the term Brony (and also what I kinda envision when I see the term "furry").
I'm a fan of a lot of other things (some of which I like even more than, say, MLP or the furry fandom), but as far as I know there isn't any "label" for being a fan of said things? IDK.
Like, I won't blatantly say I am not a furry, but I really don''t think I am as furry as some others. You would never be able to tell I am into the fandom unless you went through my computer; I think that's why some people claim to "not" be furry!
