I've had a lot of people ask me about iithra, so I decided to make a journal I could reference rather than repeating the same info over and over and over again.
I will update and modify this over time when new questions are asked and I think up new information.
In another universe a nearly impossible event occurred where the energy of a gamma burst, the most energetic phenomena observed in the known universe, somehow coalesced into an organism that could interact with four dimensions of space.
For centuries this lifeform remained dormant floating through the cold reaches of space until by chance it clung to a small asteroid which then landed on an earth-like planet. There it sought out nutrients to grow and assimilated with several examples of local fauna and a few flora. To compensate for different organisms rejecting each other its cells divided rapidly, creating antibodies which allowed everything to get along. Then it asexually divided followed soon by sexual reproduction and thus the iithra species was born.
A new born iithra develops rapidly. They are technically fully developed adults on the day that they are born. But because of their unique anatomy they can produce cells inside a pocket space and even build entire bodies that way. If this alternate body mutates in such a way that it's better adapted to the iithra's current environment then it will use those cells instead. This process repeats several times per year, so when an iithra is aging it is technically evolving.
This makes their genomes incredibly complex so genetic diseases are nearly impossible thus their culture did not develop any taboos toward incest. However this also means that iithra do not always grow up the same way. usually only one in five develop human level, or above, intelligence the others become strange beasts evolving in their own way.
