They can be fickle, yes. Especially headsets.

I recommend JVC for cheap headphones, they seem to be tanky. Creative is good too, they sound very nice and are still affordable. Frail plastic, though i havent had my year old pair short out on me.

I never used to have problems with them before. I prefer the headsets since ear buds usually hurt my ear or just fall out.
