Question: When booking hotels do you phone around?

I have hotel booking question, when booking hotels do you shop around AND actually phone the hotels to negotiate rates? I've heard of people doing this and getting deals since hotel rooms lose money if they're not booked and you can save a lot of money but does it actually work?

Oh god yes. Not just to negotiate but to ask what they have. Sometimes the websites are inaccurate because they're blank-sites, so some chains won't have X. Just don't expect too much negotiating during an event. Most hotels in an area will have an 'agreement' that during fairs, cons, shows, and other events that 'this is the price, don't go under'. Otherwise, your best option is phoning in.
