RMFC 2016 Recap
9 years ago
This con was a real roller coaster ride, as all cons tend to be. I suppose that's a good thing! The con moved to a different hotel for this year only since our normal hotel was having a big remodeling. I'll be glad to get back to that hotel next year, that's for sure.
The con hotel was just four blocks from where some of my friends live. So one of my roommates gave me a ride to their place on Thursday evening. From there we toured the con area for a bit and were immediately apprehensive about the layout of the convention area. From the main hotel proper there was a roughly Z shaped corridor that lead to where most of the convention was to take place. This hallway was narrow at times and had two blind corners thanks to its shape. I was afraid this would lead to a lot of fursuiter collisions or other con-goers bumping into each other a lot but as far as I know that didn't happen too much. I got my badge and con bag, wandered about a bit more and then headed out.
Spent the night at my friends' place and from there a couple of us took off to the con early Friday morning. I helped setup the game room for a little while before the urge to wander and see people was just too strong. It wasn't long until I saw ShadowCheetah and some other friends checking in at the front desk. I was so happy to see the bestest cheetah! That spotted cat will always hold a special place in my heart, so any time spent with him is precious. Anyone who has read my previous con recaps knows that if it wasn't for this cheetah, I might not have ever gotten a fursuit of my own. He was the first suiter to give me a hug, and his outgoing and friendly nature is very catchy.
While we waited for our rooms to become available we went for food. While this one year only hotel for the con had its drawbacks (more on that later) the fact that there were so many eateries around it made finding food fairly easy.
Spent a good portion of Friday just roaming around the con area, which is always a fun thing to do. No telling what kind of antics or silliness you might find.
I have become more fond of going to the con's karaoke every year. First couple cons I only went on the last night. This time I managed two out of three nights. I was there Friday and it was a load of fun. Singing along with the songs you know is great, and just listening to songs you haven't heard before can be interesting. And of course, hearing some very talented- and not so talented but still very brave- singers up there giving it their all worth it. Of course, it also helps to go to karaoke at least a little drunk, which is what I do xD I only drink a few times a year and the con is one of those times.
Saturday I saw SoongDae with his giant makeshift styrofoam dice. I wasn't in suit so I was nice to him and just played his game. He had both his giant die this year and a slightly smaller one for dealing out punishments. Rolling the larger die could win you a hi-chew, a strawberry kit-kat or other neat little prizes. Rolling a punishment however got you smacked with the dreaded Paper Fans of Doom +3! (I don't know if he has names for the fans that's just what I made up xD). One section of the larger die would make you roll the Die of Judgement. This one was mostly punishments of varying degrees, the worst of which had him draw this huge fan out of a holster on his back in order to smack you with it along with the other fans. Having this ultimate punishment dealt to an unwitting dice roller was likely harder on Soong than on the contestant, as it involved getting that large fan off his back, unfolding it, dealing out the punishment, then getting everything put back the way it was.
There was a Cards Against Humanity tournament on Saturday evening. I love the game but rarely win a lot of points in it but I decided to give it a shot. There were five or six tables of folks playing the game which included the original game and all the expansions plus a furry expansion. Through luck of the cards and enough people deciding that enough horrible things were funny, I ended up with the most points at my table. The winning point at my table was a black card that read "Dear Abbey, please help! I can't get an erection without __________". I filled in the blank with a white card in my hand, so that the combination read "Dear Abbey, please help! I can't get an erection without an Amber Alert." Very very bad I know but it made me the winner of my table! xD
The winner of each table then got to fill out a blank white card in response to a black card which read "The thing I'm most looking forward to at RMFC 2016 is _________". My answer made the sentence complete with "The thing I'm most looking forward to at RMFC 2016 is taking advantage of drunk furries." A vote was cast as to which of the hand written white cards was funniest and I won! I got new unopened second expansion of Cards Against Humanity! :D
Afterward a bunch of us from the tournament went Applebees where I got a bit drunk. On the way back one of the girls in our group ran into a bush. While that would have been funny under normal circumstances, my drunk self just about laughed to death ^^; I ended up missing Saturday night karaoke in the process but it was worth it.
Sunday the con was winding down but there was still fun to be had. I crossed paths with Soong again and this time I was in suit. I managed to steal his Die of Punishment and run down the hall with it. Lots of folks saw me take it and went to laughing but apparently none of them told him who took it or which way I went xD I waited a while, laughing manically and twirling the die in my paws before I slowly wandered back the way I came. Someone in the group that was with him saw me, laughed and pointed at me. Then there was Soong, charging at me with his dreaded fans! I turned and high-tailed it (pun intended) back down the hall but alas, I could not escape. I threw down the die in a last ditch effort, hoping he would take it back and be appeased but I was a fool! Throwing down the die meant that I had rolled it.. and it landed on Super Punishment! Those paper fans will forever leave scars on my soul ;.;
Later I snuck up on him again and took one of those evil fans. When he began looking for it I revealed that it was I, Nodd Mouse, who had his weapon! An epic duel commenced but again, his power, speed and strength were far too much for a mere mouse to deal with. He disarmed me and I was nearly slain by those lightweight, harmless fans. Perhaps next year I will think twice about messing with him... only, not :p
I also wandered through the board game room a few times while in suit and "stole" dice (what is it with me and dice?!) from various games in the middle of being played. I would wander toward the door with my prizes but would always give them back, usually in exchange for scritches ^.^ The last such raid resulted in someone giving me a handful of D&D spare dice from a large bag in exchange for the ones I had taken. I still have those spare dice; they will always be a reminder of the silly playfulness of that night :)
The night ended with me getting rather tipsy on three shots of vodka and coke chasers at the bar before heading off to the game room. There I sat and cuddled with Elaki for most of the rest of the night, singing songs and enjoying the atmosphere. Got to cuddle and scritch Aridwolf some more as well as lots of Loomy cuddles.
Everyone in the room gathered to sing the Bohemian Rhapsody, after which the con was over with ;.;
Today ShadowCheetah and just about everyone we roomed with went out for one more dinner together. Lots of chatting and laughing over some pretty good food and finally we had to go our separate ways.
Other highlights and lowlights of the con included the guest of honor dinner which featured some amazing food. One poor waiter crashed a plate full of cheesecake slices onto the floor, and a makeshift curtain/wall kept trying to fall down, so there was some amusement as well xD
The cocktail party was a fiasco. More than eighty people showed up for it and the hotel had only set up a handful of tables and had just one bartender to serve everyone.
The hotel told the con board that we couldn't use certain rooms. So schedules were changed and events were moved around. Then the hotel said we could have those rooms after all and set them up for us despite the con board telling them we had already made other arrangements. This lead to lots of confusion and people getting to events late.
The fursuit photo shoot and parade were a complete waste of time thanks to poor planning and the sharp narrow hallways. I will be so glad to be back at the other hotel next year.
Wow this was long winded. My thanks to anyone who read it all! And thank you everyone that attended RMFC 2016 and helped make the con one to remember! :D

FA+

Would of gone but $0
will try next year tho
With all the threats of bites and nomming on me you've done over the years, I'm almost AFRAID to meet you xD
sides I don't even have a fursuit
Always great getting to spend time with family like you, brother-cheetah :)
Your reactions to Elaki tying the pink ribbon to your tail were priceless! xD And your choice of what to put in the post-con depression kits this year was very clever. ^.^
I loved the hang out space around the bar and waterfall! But I was really upset when the cocktail party invaded a good portion of that and was left set up for hours afterwards. As it was the only open hang out space in the hotel.
The hallways between the hotel and convention space were horrible, angular, narrow. Hotel elevators were slow, too few, and smelled like burnt hydraulic oil by Saturday night. Rooms were small, beds were smaller. I never wanted to watch TV, but those were shockingly small for a "nice" hotel. :P
But the size of all the convention space rooms was fantastic!
The nazi furs were hilarious, I'm glad everyone got to see them in person. Feels like the did more damage to their own reputation during the con.
Overall, I had an absolutely marvelous time! I had low expectations this year, while some of that was correct, overall my expectations were proven very wrong. <3
