Yes I have worked Animefest again. This is perhaps the most interesting year for me at that. I have worked registration at Animefest for many years now.Havig been the head of registration at Ushi-con for many years its not hard to have me come and work for Animefest. They actually ask me to do it every year. Many a person visiting the con and paying with cash has seen me at registration.
Day one I was wearing my Kitty ears and tail with my paws. Friday was very hard. I didnt get any real sleep before I left for Dallas. I left at 2:30 Am so I could get there before rush hour. Traffic in Dallas was not bad when I arrived. Still I again missed the normal turn in down town and had to make the I45 loop back and off that way. A couple of slow spots and nothing more. Parking in the parking garage after getting my luggage unloaded I took the Second handicap parking spot. Normally I get the first one. But well you never know.
I had not eaten so I stopped in at the hotel restaurant. I was floored that the breakfast brunch was again more expensive. Last year it was 21 dollars and now its 23.99! Sheeze! You would think they would have a Convention special but nope! The hotel is just to stupid to do something that would help and make them more money. It was no surprise that the Restaurant staff recognized me as I sat down to eat I've eaten there every year the con has been at the hotel. I had a long talk to the head waiter and about the lack of a convention special that I had put in for last year at the hotel main site. When my bill came the waiter said "Staff special." dont tell anyone... I looked I paid way less than the Brunch price! (Great staff at the hotel)
I also got my room key early after eating I was approached by one of my roommates and given a room key. Being nice I waited till after 7am to have my stuff brought to the room. At 8pm I headed to con HQ to get my badge. It was not open and never did open before my work shift at 9am. I did not get my badge or items for the con. (Never did really) Heading to registration I found out that IT was behind and well we didn't get going till 9:30 and by then people were lining up and Friday was our big day. Normally its Saturday but being weeks before the Holiday the students were not at school.
I was scheduled for a 4 hour shift but well we were so short on staff I worked 6 and a half hours before being released to get my cash drawer counted. I was tired and burnt out. I was certain I had one shift that day. I hit the room and took off my shoes and laid on the bed and I was out cold. I woke to my cell phone ringing. Picking it up I get 'Where are you? Your shift is half done." Groggly I got up and went to the bathroom. While in there another staff came and checked in on me. A-fest staff are great. They took the time to make sure I was ok.
I finished my second shift and had done more than my normal scheduled time by far anyways do to the staying over earlier. I also found out why staff was checking up on people that didn't feel good. At another con one of the Chairs of that convention felt ill and went to lay down and hours later his wife went to check and he had died. Considering My health lately and I was tired and feeling ill I can see why they checked up on me. I hit the Staff suite and ate the food they had and went back to my room and crashed for the night.
I found out that the hotel net had goon from slightly decent to nearly useless before I went to bed. I called up and got the passwords and I am a Prefered Guest at Sheraton hotel. Still all I got was basic net. I was rather disappointed in that. At best you could only keep one window open if I was lucky two. Skype calls were full of drop outs as you talked. For the rest of the con contact and net was random at best.
I worked Saturday from 7:30 to 2pm at Registration and it was not bad. No real long lines to speak of but it was consistent and no real down time. I had my standard breakfast bar and stuffed myself. I always know that food rarely happens till after your work shift. After my shift I went to the Staff Suite and had the food offered. Then I went up to the room and bed again. I was tired.
Sunday was very different I have not worked a later shift in years. I did not have to show up till noon so I ate and then went and explored the con.ate my breakfast and walked around for the first time in years. It was enjoyable to search the dealers room and take pictures of some of the costumes. Talk with friends. I met Tak an old RP and con friend from years back. I also met my older friend that I normally eat breakfast with each year. We talked and checked out things.
Work that afternoon was very slow. I went and visited Staff suite and ate again and then did some more checking along the artist ally and then checked out the art show.Found and bid on a MLP luna art for a friend that I lost because someone out bid me. anyways the con was fun this year even if I was mostly broke. I worked the last shift at registration and helped take stuff down. Which was not much since I have one good arm. The con ended for me just a hair after 2:30 pm when I got into my car and headed back to my Central Texas home. I left at the right time getting by a huge traffic pile up on the other side going into Dallas. I knew I could beat the rush hour and the rain out I would be ok the rest of the way.
