Oh, I had that very same thing happen to me once - I felt horrible afterwards, and convinced myself that I had somehow managed to appear weird or creepy.
Then I received a reply a few weeks later, and it turned out the person in question was just super shy and slow when it came to answering messages.
We´ve had a bunch of conversations since, and although they aren´t too active online, they still remain one of my favourite artists.
Long story short, there is probably a reason behind all of this that hasn´t got anything to do with you in particular.
Maybe your message just got buried in the tons of notes they receive daily, especially if they are a successful artist, or maybe they just aren´t used to random (albeit lovely) people on the interwebs who just want to say hi and talk. Not everyone can be a sociable person, after all.
Yeah, I know what that's like. Been there, done that, felt like dirt.
Awkward dirt.
I remember sending a few messages to someone whose web comic I liked a few months back, telling them I appreciated their work, and also trying to give them some words of comfort and encouragement because they mentioned in some then-recent posts that they were feeling down. Never got a response. Like Hukeng said above, I felt like I came off as an intrusive creep by even trying to talk to them. To this day, a part of me still wonders if they even saw the messages.

At least you had the balls to do it in the first place. That's the first step.
