Theoretically, there isn't a limit to the amount of items that can be posted to a gallery. Practically, occasional housekeeping allows your gallery to be searchable and new material stands out more. There are also reasons you'd want to remove older works - they don't represent you anymore or they have negative emotions attached to them that you don't want.
