"For years, I've been hearing people ask for a con in the area. Tarpaw Furmeet is the plan to make that event happen.
To build a con, you have to have an existing base of people to go to it and help it grow--a base of attendees. Further Confusion, Midwest Furfest, and (then Albany) Anthrocon all started this way. Further Confusion sprung from the Bay Area furs who saw an opportunity for an event when Confurence left its established time and place in 1999. Midwest Furfest's base grew out of Duckcon's furry track in the late 90s. Albany Anthrocon grew out of a series of hotel parties put on by Roger Wilbur in the 90s. Every con grows from an existing seed base.
The fragmented nature of the North Carolina groups has made amassing this critical mass this difficult to do. Since I moved to Raleigh in 2009, I've seen no less than three attempts at starting cons in the region--none of which came to fruition. Thus, I'm taking a "back to basics" approach, looking at what made strong events succeed.
TL;DR: Let's have a furry party. :)
I've booked the hall, I've booked a DJ, I've talked to pizza places. I'm putting the event structure in place. It's time to see if enough people will attend. I've set the bar for 125. If we get that, I'll put on another party in the spring. If that party meets its goal, I'll put on a third. If the third one succeeds (in other words, we've built a base of consistent attendees up to think bigger), it'll be time to build the board of directors, put together the paperwork, and sign a hotel contract for a multi-day con.
...but it all begins with this first event.
So join us in Raleigh in four weeks for a night of furries and fun that we hope will grow into a regional con by 2018! Hope to see everyone there!"
Please buy your tickets today, mark your calendars and schedule time off, so we can make this happen! So many of us want a convention here and talk about it, but it won't happen without putting the effort in. We can make a Carolina fur con a reality within the next couple years! The TarPaw parties are a start.

Hey do it says in the description of the tickets that it is 18 and over, 21 to drink. Does that mean that people under 18 can't go?

Yes, for this event it is 18+

Well. If this one goes good I recommend that you change that. I have about 6 people that want to go but are not willing if the 2 that aren't 18 can't go.

Unfortunately, because alcohol is involved, we really can't have people under 18 show up without opening up a big mess of potential liability. If someone between 18 and 20 is caught drinking, we just eject them. If someone under 18 is caught drinking, that opens us up to legal action. And while people can promise that the minors won't consume, I've been in the fandom long enough to have seen identical episodes happen. I just can't risk that. So at least for now, the event is 18+. :(

That's upsetting but understandable. Maybe next time you have wrist bands or card people that want to drink or something similar so that others can go.

Those over 21 will have wristbands for drinking, and the bartender will not serve without a wristband. But like I said, in the eyes of liability, an 18-20 year caught drinking is different than a minor. Minors bring a whole new level of liability into play for almost any situation, unfortunately.
