[Updated] HDD FAILURE... and seeking advice on SSD
9 years ago
Welp it did not die in ball of flames. Just that I noticed it was slow from time to time and SeaTools returen short DST failure (laptop self-check stated it failed too. Microsoft said it was fine...)
Never the less I plan to Hunt for a SSD this black Friday/cyber Monday. So far the only reason I haven't get my paws on a SSD is I heard they live shorter than HDD, but from Wiki page someone said leading brands already over come that issue.
>I welcome you to share your horror (or happily ever after) stories with SSD with me and change my mind in next week.<
My current setup:
1. 1 TB SSHD (system and all of the softwares) 285GB used
2. 1 TB HDD (The dying one, storing all my fapping material)
open mSATA slot
And several External for back ups.
Chipset suppots 2 SATA-III drives.
I plan to get a SSD and Clone the SSHD onto it. Then use the SSHD in place of the HDD.
>UPDATE<
I just looked up my laptop's motherboard specifications. Turns out the only SATA III slots are the two 2.5 inch HD Bay which means mSATA is out of the question. Now I am choosing between Samsung's 850 EVO and SanDisk Ultra II.

No idea how much a 1Tb SSD is over there, but as another option, I'd look at a 512Mb (or there abouts) SSD as a system disk and a new 1-2Tb spinning data disk, probably cheaper than a 1Tb disk, but also depends on physical space in your existing system.
Now I am wondering if I should choose the mSATA version or SATA version.... hummm
Although Crucial is cheaper, it does not offer software package (migration and booster) nor non-standard warranty (SanDisk offer 3 years, Samsung offer 5 Years)
Both Samsung 850 Evo and Sandisk Ultra II are using TLC flash, also the newer Crucial MX300.
It's a perfect SSD among Custom Builders.
And if you can, go for an M.2 drive.
And unfortunately , my laptop is more than 4 years old and only have one mSATA slot left to fill.
