Stuff About Merly's World!

So what's up with Merly Bear? And what kinda world does she live in? Hold on to your hats, boys and girls, its a doozy!
First off, Merly's version of anthropomorphic animals are descended from humans, not animals! Shocking, right? Well, it all started in prehistory, or at least, at the very beginning. Two viruses began running rampant. One, horribly deadly, no cure, guaranteed death. The other was in many ways lycanthropy. This virus passed through animals, and then spread to humans, causing humans to take on the traits of certain animals. Predators, having a higher habit of attacking humans, spread their viruses the most, leading to animals like bears, canines, and felines to be the most populous species around. The virus was ineffective with insect dna, or that of invertebrates, so the vast majority are mammals, then land based reptiles and birds, then finally a few sea based reptiles. Unlike werewolves, there was only one change, and no changing back. The upside to the whole thing is, all those infected with the animal virus were immune to the deadly one, so they went out of their way to become these hybrid creatures.
As a result, since the people here are in a sense, technically human, they can all have children together, but the child will only share a species with one of their parents. A cat and a dog could produce a kitten or a puppy, but not a kitten puppy hybrid, though, the puppy might have tabby markings or the kitten might have a propensity for wagging their tail.
People in Merly's universe are a lot more animalistic than usual, and will drop to all fours and such when they feel like it. They are also immensely large, strong and tough, being technically lycanthropes. This is only notable when Merly interacts with cubs outside her own storyline, and is why she's able to carry and lift them with ease.
Regular animals still exist and are treated no differently than animals in our world, though a lot of people will have some sort of soft spot for the animals they emulate. A lot of cows, pigs and chickens are vegans because of this, though not all of them are. Everyone can still eat whatever a human can, though with mixed results. For instance, tiger teeth were not meant for carrots.
Merly is five years old and lives with Jack St. Patrick, a Wildcat and Private eye. Her mother died shortly after she was born, and her father disappeared about a year ago. Jack is working on the case in the background, as the police have given up the search, but he suspects there's something bigger buried beneath the mystery. He shares an apartment with another wildcat, his niece Mason, who shares the rent. She helps him in his cases, is a science. whiz, and is currently going to college with a major in Biology.
