Feedback regarding Windows Surface pro 3/4 for arting?
Hello!
I'm heavily considering getting myself a surface pro 3, specially now that I can get it for a whooping 600/700 bucks, but I have doubts about it~
Most uses I'll give it to is in cons and such, to do commishes there, maybe in travels and such, but no heavy work, I'll still do all of that on my pc.
I'd like to still use sai and manga studio, can you use them in the tablet with ease?
What about the nibs? I tend to change my cintiq's one every 2 months or so, can you buy 'em for the surface's pen?
Last, but not least, can european accesories such as a keyboard or the charger be used on an american tablet? This is if anything, my biggest concern.
Lemme know you if have/use one, or if you know someone that has expecience with the brand, so I can contact them

I'll check out and make a call to the closest windows store to me, hopefully they do have the pro 3 even if the website doesn't show it!
The Surface runs Windows and would be compatible with your European keyboard. If you buy it in Europe it'd probably come with whatever you need to get it running where you are.
Comparing prices, I could get the high-end pro 3 for like 600-800 where the high end pro 4 with more or less similar specs is for a massive 1400 bucks! I can deal with 600-800, but more than that is just too much for me to afford, even if that means sacrificing a bit of pressure sensitivity.
And gotcha, I was afraid you couldn't just change nibs, I'm super picky with that regard!
and yeah, I imagined you just gotta buy the european version of the keyboard/charged and such. I'm consider buying it in america's amazon, since the tasty offer is in there only, I'd have my friend ship it to me~
Thanks!
I've been using the 4 for about a year now, got it fairly soon after it came out. It's got the same pen sensitivity as an entry level Wacom Intuos: 1024. So if you're using an intuos pro or something along that line it will be a downgrade in that department, as far as pressure levels goes.
The pen itself is highly responsive, I haven't had any issues (aside from having to buy replacement AAAA batteries). The biggest issue I ran into was getting a program that worked with it. Sai and Gimp both said they did, but I couldn't get either of them to function with the pen properly, the pressure sensitivity didn't work. However Manga Studio and Photoshop both work fine, so if you're using those you should be good.
One thing I highly suggest is getting the keyboard attachment, cause it is convenient as hell, using the touch keyboard on the tablet is iffy. Though the physical keyboard will add another $100 or so.
Also: Go with a higher end model. I went with the middle man, and while I'm not disappointed, it's lower RAM and i5 processor sometimes can't handle really hefty files on Manga Studio. Lots of layers and such like that will cause it to go slow, so working in canvas sizes higher than 3000x3000 is a no no for me. I imagine the higher end model probably doesn't have that issue as bed.
If you do (or already did) wind up getting one, hope some of this stuff helps! :0
I read about the pen sensitivity, it's basically what's making me go for the pro 4 instead of the pro 3, that one only has like, 300 or something, and that might just be a bit too low~1024 tho, I can deal with it~
Gosh, does Sai not work on the surfaces? Jetshark's pro 3 ran sai perfectly, so that makes me think either it was your tablet, or the program you were running what didn't work around... That's one of the first things I'm gonna check when I get mine, cuz I'm not spending +800 bucks on a tablet that doesn't run sai, cuz I can't really art anywhere else >.>"
Regarding keyboards, I can't really work with it in front of the tablet, just like with the cintiq, I need it to be in front of me, while having the keyboard behind//in-between the tablet and the stand (the peep I shared table with at Furrnion had it that way, looked super comfy). So I'll just go for a small blutooth keyboard that can fit well, and is still small~
Hmmmm... That does worry me, I'm planning to get the cheapest version of the pro 4, cuz 800 bucks is already a whooping lot for me~ I don't plan to make massive art pieces with it, but sketch, inks, maybe cellshading, at cons and when I'm traveling~ I'm leaving the heavy work pics for the desktop and cintiq, that can reliably have 4kx4k canvases with a ton of layers!
But yeah, thank you so very much for this! I wasn't aware of the PTSai pressure issue, I very damn hope the one I get doesn't have it >.<
The whole thing about Sai not working, it may have been my copy. Far as I know I was using an unofficial copy of the program, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Though I would definitely look into that more!
But if you do get the cheap one, keep things small. You might still be able to sketch and such on a large canvas, but don't expect to do anything much more than that with a huge ass canvas size. If you're planning on using it just for travel though, it's not a bad way to go. Watch out for battery life though. When drawing on battery close programs you aren't using, otherwise your battery will drop pretty quickly.
And no problem, I'm glad I was able to help out. x3
Hmm, I have the official one, so I very damn hope it works in whichever tablet I end up buying, I can use manga studio and PS to an extent, but I basically depend on sai to do any decent art, so I'm crossing fingers here~
And yeah, as I said, I'm not planning to use it more than for sketching//inking con commishes, or while I travel around, nothing too big! As for the battery, I'll just take the charger with me when necesary, hopefully I won't need it much!
You did help a lot! I'll consider getting the i5 one, if it's on a sale of sorts when I'm ready to buy it!
