Very brief at 2:37 mark between Rathalos and Gore Magala...... in a modern day city......
While it looks visually fantastic..... WHY in modern city setting??? Getting a huge Jurassic World vibe here...

No joke, it's what I read that the two directors wanted it to be like....
I knew not to get my hopes up, but this might have killed any excitement I had.
The problem is that this won't involve humans being bombed to the stone age, this will just be random bullshit: the movie, featuring occasional references to Monster Hunter.
How fucking hard is it to fuck up the simple plot of monster hunter? Well, this dumbass found a way.
I agree with what people on /v/ were saying. Just give us a fake nature documentary on the monsters' ecology and everyone would be SO happy. No one cares really about the human characters. We want the monsters!!
This movie could have started a gravy train of films, but it's throwing it all away.
-Take no name green hunter
-ends up in *village*
-does some stuff and gets schooled in hard knocks
-big monster causes trouble
-village wants hero to deal with monster
-showcase hunter, sometimes with friends, fighting monsters
-eventually climactic fight with *trouble monster*
-seems good
-trouble still happening
-reveal true Elder Dragon class trouble monster
-final showdown between hunters and elder dragon
-repell elder dragon, people live happy ever after
Just change the hunter, village, trouble monster, and elder dragon and you have a movie series that spans FOREVER.
But yes, the ONLY way this film could be any hope is if it plays out with humanity being bombed to the stone age and the tech and such being lost to the ages.
I could stretch my disbelief to think Hunters are the lineage of genetically modified super soldiers who have to use monster parts to fight monsters since it's the only thing that can hurt them (hence swords and bowguns instead of assault rifles and such) but honestly, i don't see the writers being smart enough to do something like researching the games.
I find this VERY odd since the Mon Hun team is generally impossible to get them to agree with much anything. In Marvel vs Capcom 3, they wouldn't allow the usage of a "hunter" because "it would be impossible to pick one weapon stance to represent the whole franchise and swapping weapons mid fight is not possible in the Mon Hun games". They allowed a couple costumes for Mii fighters in smash bros, but again, no true hunter was put in the game.
How the HELL this was approved by the Mon Hun team is beyond me.
But I totally agree with all of this that you said. Hell, they could even probably make a Monster Hunter series instead of movies considering how many monsters that're excisting over the whole game series (Sony games, Nintendo and PC versions).
All that can possibly happen in this film to give any hope for the inevitable film franchise is if it does like is stated in the Equal Dragon Weapon, lead to an arms race as the elder dragons and lesser monster just ravage the human race so that the second movie can quite literally be "super soldiers with big swords vs monsters to protect the outcroppings of humans".
This seems to go against the main rule of monster hunter though...
"Balance of nature". No matter how horrifyingly large or dangerous a monster is, it's only a kill target if it is endangering a place it doesn't belong in.
Humans are not to kill in excess because MONSTERS do not kill in excess.
The Equal Dragon Weapon is a harsh reminder of how horrifying an actual war and attempt of extermination is for BOTH sides...
... I still think Gogmazios is one such equal dragon weapon that still functions when it was discovered.

Monster Hunter got so much lore to delve into, which would be near impossible to make movies of, I'd rather say as I mentioned above that a series or maybe an anime would be for the better to show non-MH players how the lore of this game is and the beauty of the monsters in it.
Hell, I remember back when I first played the PS2 release of Monster Hunter, I kept digging into and reading every kind of lore possible, on items, weapons and armors. Back then there wasn't many games aside from Monster Hunter that interested me THAT much into reading the background of things that excisted in the world of said game.
Yeah, the Gogmazios is one such dragon weapon, it has a built in mechanism I think that allows it to consume other substances than the blood of dragons to live, and in this ones case it consumed blackpowder and other explosive substanses and turned into this weird beastly tar covered monster that didn't attack humans (as it said in the link you linked at the end).
That aside, knowing the "love" the directors of the RE movies have gotten throughout the years from fans of the RE games and the animated RE movies, they'll probably gonna end up screwing up the MH movies (sad but true). And I'm calling it now that we might be seeing Milla Jovovich in it too.
That said, seeing a Deviljho in a modern day area ravaging everything and being unable to be stopped is a pretty enjoyable prospect.
