You know, as sad as it is to see an artist having to give out refunds, it's also a good thing, in it's own way. An artist who can recognise their mistakes and work to fix them is an honourable sight and worth respecting. :)

I appreciate the support. Maybe one day I can hold my head up high again and post freely and not feel like a shit. Unfortunately mistakes were made and I have to make up for them first.

I know exactly what you mean. I also try to keep commissions as a one-at-a-time deal or I just end up feeling way to stressed out about it. I've been through this once before too and I course corrected just like you are. It's not the best, but at least it's honest.

Doing one commission at a time is the way I work. That way I give one person my full attention and not cross messages.

In order of difficulty, from easiest to hardest:


Making mistakes.

Knowing you made mistakes.

Fixing mistakes.

Acknowledging you made mistakes.

Publicly apologizing for making mistakes.

Starting to fix a bunch of mistakes that negatively affected others.

Beating Dark Souls III with nothing but a nipple to control the game.


You're succeeding at everything on the list except for one item, and while it certanly isn't good that you've made the mistakes you have, the fact that you're working to fix them instead of just dropping off the face of the earth means that you're working hard on restoring the trust that people have given you, and showing that you're worth trusting.

It's easy to trust someone when nothing's at stake. It's hard to trust someone unproven when something's on the line. It's a lot easier to trust someone who's shown through their actions that if they screw up, they'll do what they can to make it right.

Just keep on truckin'. You've got this. It's not a perfect situation, but you're doing what you can to make it right, and in the end, that's what will matter most - that you put in the effort to do the right thing.

I know this feel. I was in that situation myself, having left a few people waiting too long. I gave out refunds which left me poor for a bit but it was better than feeling like I was a huge let down.

Things happen sometimes, but it takes a good person to try to make up for those things and do the right thing to the best of their ability, and I don't see too many people being upset with you doing that.

That's why I never charged in advance for my work. It meant if I didn't have the time, energy or talent to get a thing done for someone I could just be like "Hey yeah it's not happening sorry" and done.

Probably not an option for artists who ask for more than pocket change, though.

Most people are really understanding if you stay in touch. I'm sorry that you've struggled so much, but I hope things work out better for you going forward. Hang in there and do your best to make things right; you'll likely earn back a lot of goodwill if you stick to it.

An artist of your caliber, well you don't need to take a bunch of commissions on the fear that the money will run away from you.

As good as you are, you should sell three commissions at a time, fill them, then open three more. Never have more than three open- and you won't be overwhelmed. Never take more than three. If you need the money, do those three fast and open three more.
