I've had to learn the hard way myself that there are quite a few folks around here who either bid or try to purchase commissions but don't have the money to pay for them. It always seems to turn into "well, why don't you work on it and I'll get the money when you're done". Then comes the "well, I only have a small percentage of the money and I'll never have more, so since it's done, you have to give it to me for what I'm offering". I've learned to never close a commission offer until I have the money in hand.

same goes for buying commissions too. Just have to find legit research on the person.
i learned this when i was 17 and someone scammed me a fursuit head i paid $120 for the supplies and never heard from them again
