No, not the dragon.
Though he is amazing.
I mean the chat program.
People have been harassing me nonstop to get on this damn thing like it's the be all end all of the chat programs.
But you see, there is a huge issue here.
Actually.... a couple.
1) I am running Skype AND Telegram 24/7. Maybe 4 people talk to me on skype at the best of times, but 2 of those 4 people are literally ONLY on Skype and one of them is too old to learn yet another chat program when she has JUST figured out Skype. I would lose both my Skype only people entirely, or only have Skype for two people that simply do not have the will or means to change over.
2) Every single chat program I have gotten on has died. People bullied me to get on I...something something.... I dunno it came before MSN. I got on it, not even a month later everyone tells me to get on MSN because the other one is dead and nobody uses it. Ok fine. I get on MSN. Not even a year later and why are you on MSN? Skype is the best! Not really having much in the way of friends, I didn't feel the need for a chat client at all after that for a while. I make some friends, they are on Skype. Ok fine. I get on Skype. Guess what? Telegram is where it's at! Only losers use Skype now! FINE. Fucking get on Telegram.
GUESS WHAT
Now Discord is the be all end all and nobody uses Telegram not even a full WEEK after I submit to peer pressure and get on it!
See the trend?
But the insistence on getting it is getting too much to ignore so I ask you.
- How many of you are actually using it?
- What else is out there that you people will tell me to get on as soon as I switch over? Because you're going to do it. Don't even try to tell me otherwise.
- Is it worth running three separate chat clients 24/7 just to keep up with the handful of you who actually talk to me or should I just abandon the few friends that are still on Skype and move on?

FA+

i use discord, but i use it for many things. some of which "minecraft servers, Rust servers, Archeage community, gaming community, RP community, and just general chatting with friends. "
ehh, it could be worth running more then one. considering programs i have to talk with people
Steam
discord
teamspeak3
telegram
twitch(which used to be curse)
i sadly had to more or less abandon 100+ friends on skype due to the program just being trash. the advertisements alone were annoying >.< but, do what makes you happy =P
As it stands right now, Discord is the way to go... at least if you have any interest in voice calls, and intend to use your chat program for gaming. Its pretty good to use as just a chatroom hub too, but frankly I prefer telegram for that purpose. (Its the stickers!)
I will say discord does have a couple problems with it, most glaringly being that the current version of mobile discord no longer acknowledges your folders for your saved images when uploading something, and instead just lumps all of them together into one bloated list. But... I really don't see it going anywhere any time soon. It fills an accessibility and utility niche that was vacated by skype due to that program's extensive and ongoing user unfriendliness.
Tl;Dr, if you don't have any chat groups you plan on joining on discord, and don't really need a more reliable voice chat program than skype or a more refined one than telegram, I'd give it a pass. Its not worth jumping on just for 1 to 1 text chatting when you already have skype and telegram.
theyre too much fun. I get annoyed at skype because i cant reply in stickers lol
And yes, Discord is an awesome dragon.
I didnt think people still used AIM o_0
Apparently there are still a few people that use AIM in 2017. Emphasis on the word "few"
You could also just have multiple people on multiple different chat programs purely for the sole purpose of having them there just in case one of them (Skype) ceases to function or just outright kills your computer for no reason.
Mind you, I don't mind having multiple chat programs. Some people are worth it :P
I think I might pull Skype off my laptop and just leave it on my phone.
Most of the people I used to keep in contact with more often, can still reach me by Steam chat, or at least through one of the many websites (like FA or Inkbunny) that I visit regularly. The circle of people I talk to on a daily basis has rather contracted since I was in college.
2. I know what you mean. I've been though most of the major messengers: ICQ, AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, skype... And the reason for that is usually one or two things... Either one messenger had a better feature set (ICQ--> AIM, Yahoo--> MSN --> Sype), or the messenger got so bloated it forgot what it was (Yahoo, Skype). As times change, requirements for chatting casually do too.
that said, I do have it, there will be a new messenger in the next couple years I'm sure, and it's up to you to decide if you want to have a 3rd client.
Well there's this too...
nobody really tells me about it beyond "its cool you should come"
