I am Fhang, an enigma of time and space.
I know some artists use commissions from the fandom to make a living, I understand and respect that. They strive every day to improve and gain a bigger following so they can get more commissions and therefore more money to survive.
However, when an artist gets an average of $150 or more for a simple recolor of a YCH auction things start going awry. The commissioner is paying an absurd amount for a pre rendered pic to be colored. There are even some artists that are taking this even further and putting together a huge group pic of at least 8 characters and making the cheapest spot almost $300 and making a minimum of $4,000 on one picture. Sure you get what your paying for as the image is usually really detailed but again, all your paying for is a recolor of a pre rendered image, rarely does the character design reflect YOUR character.
If this wasnt bad enough, these same price gouging artists (only because they are known in the fandom) are flocking over to Patreon because over there they can gouge even more money out of you. you want to see their sketches? that'll be $5 a month. Flat colors? $10 a month. Full shaded, inked and NSFW pictures? I've seen that going from anywhere from $10 a month to $20 PER PICTURE!
Dont get me wrong. if I was a super kick ass artist known in the fandom all over the world I might consider the Patreon option, but it would only be as a last resort in order to pay bills. There are a LOT of artists that don't NEED extra money, why would they? they make a few thousand dollars every time they open their cue, which, for the ones I've seen, happens every 2 weeks or so.
But to put your art behind a paywall so your fans are forced to pay you even more to see your works. Not to mention being teased by a severely cropped image with a GIANT Patreon logo slapped on it and a description telling you how to give them even MORE money, sorry, but no.
At this point I have unwatched around 20 artists because they even stopped posting journals. a couple have completely cleared out their ENTIRE FA account and moved EVERYTHING over to Patreon.
Sorry but that is self centered, majorly egotistical and just plain fucking greedy.
