Yeah, was cracking up the moment I saw that trailer XD

A friend linked it and I saw only the title for the video at first and thought "Oh no...tell me they haven't..."

Then I wathed it, slack jawed just...couldn't believe it. And within 10 minutes my mind was reeling with possibilities for utter hilarity as all the squeaky children make Youtube videos of Original The Character.

Gotta love how history repeats it's self, but now kids have to enjoy everlasting records of such stuff hahaha.

Even if you think the idea is catering to the insane fandom...that's good! The entertainment value *cannot* be denied.

Oh I never thought this was an outright bad idea. I didn't think "Game's shit now" or anything like that.

I thought it was hilarious right from the beginning. Like just...ell as Jim Sterling asked, paraphrasing here, "Were Sega aware of what this meant? Or were they oblivious? I'm not sure which is worse".
That said, we're going to see tons of Sonichu and Coldsteel The Hedgehog characters being made.

Aaron Webber is their PR guy. Takashi Iizuka goes to Sonic Fandom conventions. They know. they know about SAGE, they know about Sonic Hacking contest, they know about Sanic and Nipples the Enchilada... They probably know Freedom Planet is a thing that's making money... and although the corporate heads of Sega of Japan require draconian levels of video sharing are a thing, their current president has stated he wants sega to get back to making quality games that excite fans, and I'm confident that they HAD to have looked over to the numbers that Dragon Ball Xenoverse did.

and yeah, there's no doubt I'll be seeing plenty of Scourge, Sonichu, Coldsteel, Cinos, etc.

I'm personally either just gonna make Shinzu if I'm lazy, or if I get the means, I'll make beta Hedgehog Sash Lilac.

I safely can say, that I grew out of the Sonic franchise, and only the artwork (not just the nsfw ones!) keeps me checking it from time to time. Fans and those who are really feeling connected to the game's atmosphere however created their own OC or just used the canon ones for whatever reasons.

Now they are semi-free to go apesh*t crazy and spend hours...years in the character editor screen. I'm not really thinking it is a bad thing, but I sure can feel the irony. Now, everyone's OC is welcomed in canon...how awesome is that? Much. Isn't that what RPG players are doing in "Baldur's Gate"-esque games? Also creating different OCs will result in replay-ability. Why? You need to have a badass male character to kick ass, then a pretty girl for the possible pantyshot screencaps, then you can go create a new one for whatever twisted purpose...If the game plays well, then these semi-OC options are giving the game a longer life. If they would throw in custom skins or unlockable skins (per say: fully roboticized form for your OC) that would really give the game a long life.

Well, have to see how it does on the field test! Sonic fans! Ready? Set. GO!

I really don't know what to make of it myself. At once I can see the brilliance and/or the desperation and irony of this move. Ironic because people at Sega have stated their distaste for the crazed part of the fandom that this customized character maker caters to. I'm not against it, DB Xenoverse did it and it worked pretty well. Hard to tell at this point if this will work. But damn, if these next few days aren't gonna be interesting...

That pretty much confirms to me that they're going to have DLC packs of new character customisation options.

Yeah it seems like everyone's doing a double take on it. Especially when it says Windows OS as a platform. There will be nude mods and porn somewhere because of, people with free time. Folks will be ripping characters out for Source Film Maker or adding in custom body types and parts to mod Archie characters, or parts to make characters that may not be in the game. I'm almost certain that apart from the eyelash there's not much to indicate gender since the trailer has them mostly naked in the first place. But I believe they may make other body types and accessories (parts for bird characters, or robot parts for not metal sonic) as paid downloads to extend its shelf life. I am thinking this because so far everything seems to have the same base concept as that flash based Sonic Character Designer someone made a few years ago. A base body with limited parts from all the other characters, change the color etc. Makes me wonder if someone on Sonic Team or Sega saw it and thought "hey good idea we can do it better and for profit".

Otherwise it can be a brilliant marketing gimmick since we all wanted to know who or what that new character was in an earlier trailer (its you). Or it could turn out to be making up for actual game play or the lack there of. Since 2006, Sega made a record of doing that with Sonic. However if you make "your character" can you rip it for something else or are all the parts used in them trademarked by Sega as "their" assets? Either way that trailer is working as intended.

The selection of animal bases is disappointing. If all the customisation is behind fucking loot boxes I will scream.

i mean....okey it sure sounds weird but im honest, how many people here are calling renamonrecolors (i dont even need to look VERY far...) or stuff like their "OCs"? If i even look at me, i created characters from a "universe" where everything is black and white and you know how dayum hard it is to come up with such stuff? XD
