It's been several years since I did any traveling outside the US. I had some trouble getting a visa as well. Unfortunately, the simplest thing to do is wait -_- I did eventually get mine. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

How did you get it? Did you apply online, call or write? Did you go to the embassy for an interview? And by wait, do you just mean keep trying?

Depends on where you live. If your friend lives in or close to a city with a Danish consulate, then he can go in and apply personally. My dad had to do that once for a visa to India, but I wasn't there for that. Or if he doesn't live close, then there are some online services which will walk you through the application process online. But it's been almost 10 years since I traveled out of the country. Things may have changed since then. Either way, you may have to just wait for a bit. But I recommend doing the online service if it can be afforded... Also I assume your friend has a passport?

All I know is that people get them far in advance of when they need them due do the delays.

If your friend has a passport a travel visa (assuming it is short term) is stamped on the passport.

Per the US State Department website, the current agreement between the US and EU/Schengen is that no visa is required for all travel under 90 days within a six month period so long as they are on a current/valid passport. So long as your friend doesn't go over 90 days in country, he/she literally needs to do nothing.

When I went to the Netherlands last year I didn't need anything other than my passport itself, so I can personally confirm it to be valid.

The way the state department site reads, it's irrelevant as to the type, only the length of stay matters. If you need more than 90 and it's due to a school affiliation, most schools have a point of contact who does this sort of thing repeatedly and can explain the process, talk to the administration section and someone will likely know more.

When I traveled outside the US for my senior trip, the only thing we needed was a valid passport, not a visa. It was a cruise through some of the Caribbean though, so it may have different rules. That was more than five years ago as well, but I recall only a passport was necessary.

If they need a visa beyond a basic tourist visa, I've always liked using a visa service to handle it. It costs a bit of money, but they are knowledgeable and take care of everything. I've used Travisa myself, but there are several to choose from.

as far as I know, if you plan to stay less than 3 months and not go to Russia and stuff, JUST THE PASSPORT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.

A basic passport, especially from the USA, should be more than sufficient, unless the EU changed their policies lately... which considering they're pushing to erase national borders, I can't really see that as being a thing. I'd make a joke about claiming to be a refugee (migrant), but that would be in bad taste. >_>
