Accounts are Free. If that name is associated with you, and available, create an account for it, link this page to that, and that page to this one.

It's not that big of a deal. If only half of your watchers seem to follow you over, it's only because the other half are inactive, abandoned or dormant accounts. You need only post a "I've moved. Follow me here" submission to an old account once every few months to give those who need to know the message.

Best part is ... you don't need to delete or abandon your old account or anything. Just ... make another one.

Easy. If that identity is valuable to you, and people will be looking for you under that name, Reserve it. Create the Account anyway.
