Much like my other 'Universal" series, please not that these are in MY headcanon and not how they are perceived in media, mythology, and other more accurate forms of information. Everything here is MY headcanon and is not the legit stories and folklore of the kitsune.
Let's begin.
--Kitsune come in several shapes and sizes depending on their location. A woodland kitsune would be more lithe than an arctic kitsune, but not as thin as a desert kitsune
--Likewise, all kitsune have their own unique ability, often in the form of elements. This is true for roughly 70% or less of the kitsune population at its peak numbers. Other kitsune generally don't have abilities regarding elements and/or have become too old to use such magic.
--Kitsune form bonding pairs with their own species and mate with that person for life. Though most kitsune are pansexual, they tend to have a breeding partner to make children and can generally use another partner for pleasure/emotional satisfaction.
--There are no vegan/vegetarian kitsune. Because their bodies require lots of energy and because kitsune CAN hibernate depending on location, they tend to stock up on their favorite meats and produce. That said, it's not uncommon for kitsune to prefer fruits/veggies to meats.
--All kitsune have a certain amount of magic that they keep in their body. This number can swell or decrease depending on situations such as battle, magic in the air/water, and age.
--All kitsune wear a mask of some kind. It does not need to be on their head but it does have to remain on their body at all times. Most kitsune use theirs as a belt-like accessory, hooked on their tail(s) or on the back of their head.
--If a kitsune's mask is damaged in battle, they tend to grow extremely weak and can collapse on the spot. Most kitsune store their magic in their mask and it acts much like a soul. If the "soul" is damaged, the kitsune becomes damaged.
--If a mask is to break, the kitsune will reincarnate. This can take several days to weeks. Once they reincarnate, the kitsune will return to the age they last remembered. This can become a bit strange as some kitsune--due to how long they live--may remember their childhood more clearly than their adulthood, making them return as children.
--If a kitsune reincarnates, they will eventually retain their ability to transform and regain their power/element. Much like reincarnation, this can take days/months/years.
--All kitsune have a statue they become when they either sleep or hibernate. This happens when they need to regenerate their magical powers. Some kitsune also use this as a chance to pray and take a breather from life. These statues are extremely sturdy and cannot be harmed unless a being is able to strip through their magic barriers.
--At said shrines/statues, these kitsune can perform wish granting--if it's small. Some humans use them as means of safe travels, others use them for their own greed and wealth. If the human is to deliver the kitsune's favorite food, more often than not, their wish will be granted. Wish granting also depends on the human's wish and the kitsune's personality. A more chaotic kitsune will take on a more daunting task while a nicer kitsune will generally adhere to safe travels/good luck charms.
--The default kitsune form is that of a human with fox ears, tails, claws and fangs, and slitted eyes. Some kitsune wear contacts, others hide their ears with accessories. Kitsune are never found in simple clothing, preferring robes and dresses with sashes and shawls.
--A kitsune's fox form is that of a regular red fox in terms of size though slightly larger. They can have a patterned pelt or a simple one. In this form, the kitsune generally only show one tail. Immortals and mages can see the extra tails on the foxes' body, however.
--Kitsune generally have natural colors with small hints of unnatural colors lining their pelts. Whites, creams, tans, greys, blacks, silvers, browns, reds, yellows, oranges and more are generally base colors.
--At the time of birth, a kitsune is given a large ball of clay and, as they age, that clay absorbs their magic powers. Once they become toddlers and are able to change forms, this clay will then shape itself into a mask through a ritual. The detail of a mask depends on the kitsune's soul and personality. Some kitsune have simple masks, others have complex masks. Some don't even have "true" masks at all.
-A kitsune's hair and tails are their pride and joys. Most kitsune have long, lengthy hair and tails and are kept clean and brushed. A kitsune will cut their hair for several reasons: loss of a family/partner, mourning, loss of a tail(s) and often times, failure to Ascend.
--AN Ascension is when a kitsune takes all the magic they've ever stored in their masks/tails/soul and transforms into a massive beast. This beast is extremely large and powerful and as the kitsune battles, their tails tend to fall out and turn to ash. Once the kitsune wins the fight and/or loses all but one tail, they Ascend, their body becoming ash and then climbing into the sky where they become a star. This is the utimate lifetime achievement for a kitsune.
--An Ascended kitsune can return to Earth but only rarely. These kitsune will have detailed fur patterns, masks, and ethereal hair. Their body will be adorned in body paints and long robes signifying their ascension. Their tails will either turn back into the max number or become one large tail that they drape around their shoulders or as belts to keep it out of harm's way. This tail(s) is heavily guarded.
--An ascended kitsune is a true Immortal and cannot die. They can, however, reincarnate at will. Unlike a regular kitsune, an Ascended kitsune will always have its element and age before it reincarnated. However, an Ascended kitsune cannot use this to grow more tails or restart their life cycle. Much like a real star, Ascended kitsune tend to burn out after a while and must return to their star by becoming a new one through reincarnation.
--Despite being similar, kitsune and werewolves are rivals. Whereas kitsune are true beings, werewolves are beings that cannot remain as their true form. It causes some tension between the two species but there is no hate between them. Likewise, there is no hate between kitsune and naga though they prefer to be away from each other's companies. Most kitsune tend to stay in each other's home villages away from the other species.
--Marriages between kitsune are a huge event though not entirely for the same reason as humans/other species. A kitsune's wedding means that two clans have merged because their leaders have mated and become one. This can strengthen clans and give them more choices for a breeding partner. These weddings generally last a few days on end witrh feasts, songs, dances, and rituals. Each kitsune is donned in body paint that glows and they dance throughout the night, making their own streaks and constellations.
--A pregnant kitsune will remain in human form until the pregnancy is done. The baby is born with the generic kitsune body and as such is treated pretty much the same as a human baby. The kitsune will have floppy ears and a thin, ropey tail and as the days go by, the ears will start to prick up slowly and the tail will grow fuzzy and soft. It is at this time that the parents name their child after an object, usually a plant, flower, or fungi. The name choosing tends to take a while as it depends on the child's fur color and eyes.
--On the topic of eyes, a kitsune baby will be born with their future eye color as opposed to the blue of most cubs/humans. However, their eyes will have a round pupil and the color will be pale and muddy. Most parents do not share their eye colors and the colors often mix. Two yellow-eyed kitsune can have a green eyed baby, for example.
--A kitsune's death outside of reincarnation/Ascension is powerful. Every kitsune around the world can feel the death of one of their own, which leads to a strong, intense pain coursing through their body. It's an innate feeling every kitsune knows well. A dead kitsune dies much like any other being. However, their body will rapidly deteriorate and dissolve into the ground, leaving behind their skeleton. The skeleton will grow moss and a rich, thick, sturdy flower that will bloom over the body and eventually 'bury' it from view. The dead kitsune will go through a sort of chrysalis phase where the skeleton will change and harden and return to the fox-like for it should be. If a kitsune dies in fox form, the skeleton does not change. Said skeleton will then become somewhat fossilized and the flowers will continue to bloom, wilt, die, and grow again forever unless burned by another kitsune or an Ascended takes the skeleton.
--Said skeletons are usually untouched by humans as they're said to bring curses and bad luck. Other humans collect them and sell them for a hefty price. The flowers on said corpses are said to ward off Immortals and are used in medicines though there isn't any proof that they work.
--Most kitsune live in solitude since the Great War. It's estimated less than 100 of them exist though due to them hiding, this number may be skewed. The remaing kitsune are mostly female, making reproduction--much like with the rest of the Immortals--near impossible.
--Kitsune have since moved on to other species, simply leaving behind any hope of reproducing and instead living out their immortal lives in peace with their significant other. Other kitsune have just wandered the Earth aimlessly, hoping to run into a fresh face.
--The quickest way to befriend a kitsune is to offer them their favorite food, which can be found out just by asking or leaving an offering at the shrine. Some kitsune have become so petty that they'll even leave signs asking for a certain food. In Lilys case, hers in honeycombs. However, she hates when people don't leave her a fork or spoon.
--A kitsune's favorite food can often lead to a small boost in recovery for the fox, with health, stamina, or even magic. It can even turn their mood around for the rest of the week, keeping them happy and content. A happy fox is a guaranteed ally and friend.
--Kitsune tend to have a follower, often in the form of a woodland creature. It's generally some sore of bird, but others have been known to keep rabbits, deer, wolves, bears, and even creatures like whales and cobras.
--Among other things, kitsune can also regenerate magic from being in the vicinity of another magical being such as a mage, a centaur, etc. This magic is similar to that of a wireless charger and the kitsune charges over time. It's slow and gradual but it's a quick pick-me-up when a kitsune's in dire need.
--Kitsune can also shapeshift into other creatures though it's temporary and they cannot mimic their voice. Unfortunately it's quite limited and they can only take on a human or a foxes' guise.
