This is a really great plan. I only see a tiny, teensy flaw with it: No student in their right mind is going to WANT to install this shit on their phones! 130.000 users? I SERIOUSLY doubt that

Well, if you really need help controlling those impulses, I don't see the problem of using it voluntarily, but naturally someone's going to try making it mandatory

Smart phones weren't even a thing when I was in school. Kids don't need phones to completely space out if they aren't interested. They're treating symptoms, not the real issues

I completely agree, it is absolute nonsense to expect students to install this.

The ones who are paying attention all the time might look at their phone every now and then, and that is their right. But they aren't the issue, the other ones will just be drawing in their notebook instead of looking at facebook

Eh, my online classes have a required program called the lockdown browser. It shuts down almost all programs on your computer when launched, and goes to the classes page. You can't alt-tab while it's open, or do any other means of screen-changing. And the online quizzes are coded to require that browser to take. As optimistic as the poor fool that made that was, they didn't seem to be aware that most people have phones, or some other source of going online, and all it does it make things annoying.

Yeah for real, I have a phone, a laptop and a desktop. Wouldn't be hard to get around that!

There's a simpler solution. Ask all students to shut off their phones - and then one by one go around the room and collect them. In the middle of class, allow a 5-minute "phone time", for students to check for important messages or calls missed, then re-collect the phones until the end of class. ^^

Nope, if a student wants to have their phone on them they can. It isn't up to post-Secondary schools to police what people are doing in something they are paying to do.

If people want to be on their phone, they could easily be doing even bigger time wasting things on a laptop or tablet and the professor will likely not be able to tell out of their hundred students.

The onus is on the students to pass, and the professor can easily tell who is or isn't paying attention when they are marking assignments or tests.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. Already i'm seeing instances in high schools where phones are being shut off at the door, or in extreme cases, taken away. So what if the student is paying for the service? The teacher is being paid to teach, and their salaries and rights supersede those of the kids. ^^

Kids are different, in post secondary they are no longer kids. That is kind of the whole point of post secondary.

If any school from K-12 wants to ban phones in class, go for it. That is their prerogative, but it is not the same case for post secondary. Those are people who are becoming adults, and yeah maybe they should turn off their phones if they can't pay attention. But to force it on them, that I do not agree with.

Phones are just an overall issue! Period!
We see it all the times with people in public places and OH HEY DRIVING!
Still I agree Sin, this is BS for secondary schools and it's up to the individual to take it upon themselves to pay attention!
Kids in school tho is another issue!
