*Note: this is a virtual copy of a reply I made to a journal by Vicky Wyman.
That screech isn't about Beyonce voicing Nala. It's about the utter stupidity of doing a live-action version of a film that has no human presence in it... and the animal "actors" do such completely natural things as lie around in humanly-seductive poses or do the hula in a grass skirt.
Next remake: Bambi.
Hello.
My name is Bambi.
You killed my mother.
Prepare to die.

And yeah, that idea for a live-action version of TLK makes no sense whatever.
I heard the last crime of that sort, the jungle book thing, looked especially lifeless. I doubt life-action TLK will look better. where is the fun without the cartoony exaggerations?
well, if they had Sean Connery starring as Scar and maybe Alec Guiness as That Obnoxious Bird™, I'd consider. I mean Sean played a dragon successfully. XD
what you bring as argument is what took me aback browsing a furry fan-writing book about a lion pack's exploits. as presumed it was a lot like TLK... the moment one of the lions made a throwaway gesture I closed the book and put it back.
hm, who would play the Rats of Extraordinary Size?
I suddenly wonder if Trump has six fingers on one hand...
(Especially since it was a rip-off of "Jungle Emperor" in the first place!)
I don't buy it.
Let's look at the similarities. Leo (Jungle Emperor) is a cub with friends, most of whom would be prey species. Many of his encounters are with men. He has no part in his father's death (killed by men, IIRC), he's captured, and his mother sacrifices her life so he can swim an incredible distance to shore to become emperor. During the anime he never ages, although he does grow to adulthood in Tezuka's manga. (Apologies for any misremembered details: I'm working from recall of over 50 years.)
Simba starts as a spoiled brat (I Just Can't Wait To Be King) who gets duped by his uncle (who wants to take over the pride) into luring his father into a trap that's supposed to kill both Simba and Mufasa. Simba survives, but is guilt-tripped into running away from all his responsibilities (Hakuna Matata). It takes a visit from his father's ghost and the sex appeal of Nala to get him back to assume his duties as King of the Jungle.
Similarities: young lion cub with friends who should be prey.
Differences: everything else.
Was Disney inspired to do TLK because of Jungle Emperor? Probably, almost certainly. We know that their animators were influenced by Miyazaki, so why not Tezuka? (Miyazaki's influence most clearly shown in the flying scenes in The Rescuers Down Under: a complete ripoff from Nausicaa's.)
Inspiration, yes.
Greed, yes.
Ripoff, no.
And a remake, especially so soon after the last one, is egregious.
