weird, I'm surprised the PC police managed to taint a smaller studio. I mean heroes from the big 2 tend to have a lot more mainstream coverage and money which is like a beacon for the undesirables, but dredd is slightly more obscure which usually protects them from whingeing and scrutiny. Of course maybe he's more popular in the UK or something hence the tampering. First I've heard of anything like that, so it's new to me.

Here was the issue, Pepe had been used for so much even before 2016.
And the creator had no issue with it. Only when the ADL stepped in along with the DNC, labeling it as a racist symbol,people were using it in that way ironically to spite them. Then Furie decided to kill off the character for no reason. Pepe no longer belonged to him "internet wise" it became something alot bigger and despite him making it, it has become much more and the way he went about it also didn't help his case. In short, he kind of killed his golden goose.He let the PC police control what his creation was. And imstead of going against them, went against the ones who enjoyed his creation.

the funny part is I don't think it's only internet wise the character no longer belongs to him; There is a point in trademark law when something becomes "generic" when you fail to defend it enough times and can no longer sue when someone uses it. The term thermos is a good example of this since everyone started using the term and it was years before the actual thermos company decided to crack down, but it was thrown out of court for that exact reason of "generic-ness". It's also why hasbro is sometimes seems counterproductive in what they choose to shut down getting into the tangent of magic equines (however I assert that nintendo is just run by dickwads though despite the reasoning being similar). I think Furie passed that line years ago which makes some of his recent assertions laughable (though I still kind of feel empathic hence the journal kind of pointing out that thought experiment)

Yes! That too! I forgot to mention that. Pepe had become so mainstream, he missed the bus on that long ago. And he using the copyright for the wrong reasons, only cause it came up recently.

It would be pretty disheartening. I understand why he did what he did. The association of anything I made with anyone like the types who use Pepe now is literally sickening. Poor guy, losing his property because the internet moves too fast for conventional copyright. I'd imagine it would be possible for memes to blitz unfair use so fast and in so many places a centralized creator could never defend it. And the death of the author goes mechanized.

But, at least it serves as a cautionary tale, and now Pepe is shorthand for people to ignore.

yeah it's pretty brutal for the creator I imagine, on top of being incredibly random & baffling to boot. It's strange how memes can follow the same rules of natural selection actual organisms do where something can change so much over time that it's not even recognizable, I've never seen anything like it XD
