Been there. I used to have lots of 'friends' who wanted me to work on their computers for free. "Well, I thought we were friends, right?" Yeeeaaah, but I can't eat guilt, you know? I started telling them up front, "It's $20 an hour, or feed me dinner. Make it or order it in, and McDoodles and Scrubway isn't going to cut it." Last time someone asked me to remove a virus from their machine, I charged $40/hr, and it took four hours (had to reformat their hard drive and reinstall Windows). B@st@rd still owes me $10.
I have the other side of the coin. Artists bugging me for free or cheap tablespace at my old furcon or helping them get hotel rooms/etc at other cons cause * I know folks*. I just find it funny cause once you do them the solid its *poof* gone again till the next years con rolls around. Kind of used to the burn as you tell them no suddenly its all daggers and growls at you :/.
The thing is, exposure is so easy, anyone can just draw things they like to draw and stick it online. Working for "exposure" is that - minus the doing what you like part. It's like paying less than zero.
Any time I hear this canard, I politely remind them that I can't eat exposure. I can't pay my bills with exposure. I can't fill my gas tank with exposure. I try to be understanding that a lot of people don't have huge amounts of discretionary spending to toss around but there's only so far my understanding can stretch.
Fucking.
Shit!
I've had too many furries here on FA approach me, literally pulling this same shit!
