It's a service charge for having them convert the money for you. So, yes.

Converting currencies is never free.

It's their service, so they can charge what they want. It's like how banks also charge extra fees on converting money.

You'll still lose some if someone's paying from another country. Even when they select 'CAD' in the currency dropdown, their own currency will need to be converted - that's where the charge is. I make people pay me in GBP and I still lose £2 - £30 depending on how much is coming in :(

Yes but it comes out before it hits your account. If an American customer sends me £20GBP (GBP being my currency), I'll get about £18.30GBP. It's Paypal Policy that the seller accepts the charge, for whatever reason.

That's not to say "Don't do it!" of course, it's always easier to be paid in your own currency! It's just that they will still take a cut so long as you're labelling the payment as a business transaction rather than a gift/ family & friends transaction.

I will always lose form the general paypal fees, they are like 4% but Im not being robbed as much when i convert my currency in the end if i just take my own. I get it!

I noticed a big difference when I switched to Canadian dollars a couple years ago. The only reason I ever accepted USD was I made most of my purchases online in USD, now I just let my credit card handle it and bypass pay pal if I can, the conversion fee ends up lower.

The buyer ends up paying the conversion fee, so Paypal still takes their pound of flesh. Have you considered an alternative like Square?

Even with an extra charge for using a credit card, making my CC convert was still cheaper than PP's horrendous exchange rate.
It's a net drop if done right.
