Stuff I found - Soulwax's Under The Covers Mixes
8 years ago
Beep boop.
Oh. My. Goodness. Alright, I really meant to talk about this sooner but I just kept forgetting and forgetting but heh, here I am, ready to talk about Soulwax, also known as 2manydjs. They're a electronic/alt-rock group who made a particular project called Radio Soulwax, where they created a day's worth of hour-long mixes to play on their website. Within Radio Soulwax, there were three specific mixes that caught my attention immediately after I began listening to them, and they're the Under The Covers mixes.
I absolutely love the UTC mixes, all three of them basically take all sorts of songs (newer, older, popular, lesser known, etc.) and add their Soulwax magic to 'em with all sorts of DJing stuffs. There were several moments where I just couldn't bring myself to listen to the originals of the songs featured in the mixes cause the UTC versions were just that good. (Thankfully some can be found to purchase (through iTunes, at least) or just find around the internet) The audio's only half of it all too, the visuals bring everything together as well. Each song has its own animation while its playing and the clever thing about them is that they'll mostly be animations of the song's album artwork, which is awesome!
Ima just go and link and give a description to all three of the mixes now, but even my words alone can't do 'em justice, ya gotta listen to them yourself!
Just uhhh, keep in mind that there'll probably be some NSFW parts, I'll definitely notify about those. The visual ones, at least. Without further ado...
Under The Covers Vol. 1

Volume one, the mix that started it all. I believe this one had the most foreign (to me, at least) music out of the three, not a good or bad thing, just something I noticed. While this isn't my favorite volume, it's still pretty hecking fantastic. I especially like the song they end with, Fischerspooner - Emerge.
19:13-24:13 is one of my favorite parts, especially when Kraftwerk - Tour De France fuses with Diplo - Percão, that was pretty noice. (Fun fact, Percão, while in a different language, is hella explicit. You can uhhhh, find out how on your own. Or don't. At least the rhythm sounded nice, heh.)
Under The Covers Vol. 2
https://vimeo.com/26149014 14:40-16:03, 20:44-22:19 and 34:05-35:25 contain NSFW imagery
Volume two, the first mix out of the three that I listened to, actually. Note remembered a friend showing it to him and he listened to it, but he wasn't as interested. He must've been half deaf the first time he listened cause the second time he gave the mix a shot, he was dancin' through the whole thing, heheh. He says this one is his favorite and I don't blame him. In my opinion it's better than volume one, buuuuuut, it's still not the best volume. Again though, it's hella good.
29:32-34:20 is one of my favorite sections, I just can't stop bobbing my head whenever Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You's involved. it really enhances Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control with how when that song's small vocal part ends, Stardust's guitar riff kicks in, it's just sooooo good. The Clash - The Magnificent Dance also makes a very good enterance and continues its funkiness once Boys Noize & Erol Alkan - Lemonade wanders in. 2manydjs, thank you for blessing my ears with this masterpiece.
Under The Covers Vol. 3
Volume three, my absolute favorite out of all the mixes. One and two got pretty hectic at some points but I can really feel the energy that three has to offer. I think I can thank the handful of electronic music that's more prevalent here than in the other mixes, but even then the other songs still hold up well (probably cause they get the Soulwax treatment, heh).
37:23-39:51 is a really nice part, Loops Of Fury - I Need adding more of a beat to Motörhead - Ace Of Spades is pretty sweet but once that's out of the way, I Need hecking soars on its own, but it gets even better. 38:52 starts a long buildup to introduce Nid ϟ Sancy - Skinny Fit (Soulwax edit) and once the drop happens (39:21), oh my goodness. I-I just cannot fathom its breakbeat beauty.
26:27-32:50 also gets an honorable mention. The Specials - Gangsters' guitar part acts as a nice end to Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime (Soulwax edit) and beginning to Zombie Nation - Tight (Etienne De Crecy remix), the rest of the transitions sound great too.
Sooooooo, yeah. That's all I have to say about Soulwax. I'd go look at some of their other stuff as well, which may not be as great as the UTC mixes, but c'mon, they're Soulwax, I bet they've got some good stuff lying around.
Heh, hope this makes up for the long hiatus between posting stuff. It's most likely going to happen again but eh, might as well leave something coolio here while I have it in my mind. I actually feel really inspired by the UTC mixes too, to the point where I'd like to make my own sort of mix, but instead featuring music as seen in video games, mostly indie titles like Super Hexagon, Zenzizenzic, Monolith, etc. I can't promise progress or anything, it's just an idea for now. Still though. .w.
