Thoughts on YCH's (Auctions) from a random unknown ass hat!
This is going to be a long rant.
Let me also state this journal is NOT aimed at anyone or the fact I recently lost an auction. Lmao
Am I the only one who is slowly hating YCH auctions more and more and more ?
Isn't it bad enough that more than HALF of my submissions box on a daily basis is nothing but YCH announcements and reminders ?
It becomes rather repetitive and annoying having to clean something I could classify as spam on a daily basis because it's become the thing of the now.
Now let me say a few things before I follow up on this so you don't get the wrong idea (or some shit head (:D) decides to state the obvious in the comment section)
I understand that art is a luxury.
I understand that artists need money.
I understand that in most cases the art is worth a good amount of money.
It's been a few years now and the YCH auctions get more and more ridiculous as time goes by.
Unless you're willing to break the bank you are NEVER and I mean NEVER going to get a commission from certain artists.
No, I shall not name those artists but you damn well know who they are.
You end up paying about double if not triple if not QUADRUPLE what the usual commissioning price is and it usually doesn't even go past a fucking simple BG 1 character slot piece.
If you're a random person that runs a decent job, its quite a high chance that you do not have 400/800/1000 dollars to throw at an artist for a piece that is worth a FOURTH that price when it isn't an auction.
Usually when you have that kind of money sitting in the bank you end up using it for BETTER alternatives. (Such as dentist, car, insurance, whatever)
I mentioned earlier that I UNDERSTAND that art is a luxury. I DO.
But you must also understand the frustration from a persons perspective when they would cut off a limb to get art from a talented artist (especially one they really like) but simply do not have that kind of money to throw at it. Especially not all at once!
What I HATE even more is that artists that discover how much money they can weasel out of stupid people with high paying jobs (or probably basement dwellers that have nothing better to throw their money at since mommy still pays the bills) with continuous auctions and then convert to a gallery full of NOTHING but YCH auctions from that point on.
What ever happened to the standard way of getting a good piece of art from someone ?
Commissioning seems to be a dying fucking breed of trade because everyone is too busy farming those numbers in the comment section.
There are artists I wish I could commission. Artists that draw absolutely stunning things I WISH I had the mental capacity or skills to create in pixel form
... and yet I dread their existence sometimes because of the prior mentioned bull shit they bank on.
I'll most likely never get art from them because I REFUSE to pay a price that someone other than the artist chose.
Throwing a bidding war out there is the easiest thing to do and it makes you look like nothing but a money hungry douche.
I suppose I can't blame them though, money is what makes the world go round and pleasing someone that loves your work doesn't pay the bills.
If this entire journal makes me look like an idiot that would be because I am.
I don't know, whatever. I just wish shit went back to the way it used to be.
(Looking at the tick box below here "disable journal comments" seems like a good idea but it's not like me. I like to have interesting conversations rather than lock a journal so people can't tell me I'm wrong. IM A MAN DAMN IT)

And yeah, sadly it's not just the artists fault. In fact we could both argue its more the users that are to blame.
But hey, I suppose bitching and whining in a journal makes it sting a little less.
(PS. I still fucking love that icon.)
But anyway you're not the first nor the last whos annoyed by this trend. its just something we'll have to live with.
I'm behind supporting artists, because frankly making a living off of art is an incredibly hard thing to do, but I feel like in that drive to try and compensate for that work artists jack up their prices to just ridiculous levels. It's one thing to earn $20-$25 an hour for your work, it's another to expect $45+. Doctors don't get paid that much, and I think if people really considered that when they bid or buy absurd amounts they'd be disappointed too.
I also HATE when people post reminders every god damn hour for the same picture.
From artist's perspective I consider them to be a good way to quickly fill a slot when I want to draw something specific. I'm speaking not about a mass-production of similar pictures for the sake of "auction". I mean, sometimes I have an interesting idea of a picture I really would like to draw, but I don't have enough own characters for it and I'd like to use "your character here". It happens just a little bit more often than never.
However I really hate a constant stream of announcements and reminders in my inbox. I wonder, do some artists really think their watchers have THAT bad memory?
I mean I don't have an issue with a YCH submission per say, it's more of the auction side of it that bugs me.
On another note,
My only wish towards artists that post YCH's is that they introduced a factor for the working folk too. 80% of the time there's an auction that goes on in the middle of working hours
It would benefit the watchers tenfold if an artist said "Post "IM INTERESTED!" in a comment and you might get chosen randomly" rather than someone stating they want it first.
It not only provides new characters that are rarely chosen but also less of the overly drawn same ctrl-c-v characters we see so often.
Slight quick edit: Always more interesting to see artists perspectives on these things so thank you for the two cents :)
Quick edit: Thanks for the watch too!
Once you get popular enough in this community, no matter how much you jack your prices up, people will still want to commision you. Even moreso if you are doing comissions rarely.
And yes, ych reminders are starting to get on my fucking nerves as well - Isee that a new submisson has been added, I check it - another YCH reminder. I'd ask staff if there's a way to filter these out, but you can't even change your username here (they tell you to make another account! Riddiculous), so I doubt such function will ever be implemented.
If FA had a tag system that worked almost the same way then it would likely become flawless (in terms of design, at least).
But one can dream!
(i found this journal when wanting to vent about YCH spam, which seems to have only gotten worse)
(Yes, it really has. Makes me want to unwatch certain people but their art holds me back most of the time)
I'd love to name a few artists I wish I could get something from but there is always something better on my plate I could be putting that kinda dough towards.
Ych are becoming absurdely expensive? No prob, you can try to win a free raffle
Buuut Unless you are a close friend of the artist or a popular fur you will never win
is the artist itself that chooses who is going to get that free art piece
Even if they do, it's VERY hard to believe they don't choose which character they want to draw.
The cynic in me believes that an artist will always cherry pick who they want to draw. And I'm not stating they will just go through submissions and pick exclusively their friends or whom they're most comfortable with, but I am pretty confident in saying they will randomly choose someone, check their character and then if they don't like what they see they will continue to refresh that random number until they find something they're either very comfortable with or something they feel they can actually draw.
tl;dr
Yes, free art raffles are likely rigged and not worth your time.
Unfortunately raffle Participants cannot see the number estraction Live so they can't accuse the artist of cheating or rigging the whole thing
